What is Recipient Authentication?

Recipient authentication is an option that can be individually set for each recipient so that they are required to prove their identity with additional information. This is useful if the documents being sent contain identity-sensitive information. There are three additional forms of authentication that recipients may provide. One or all three methods can be applied to every recipient:

  1. Phone

    1. requires the recipient to answer a phone call and provide an authentication code and their name in order to view documents that were sent to them. See phone authentication for more information.

  2. SMS

    1. the recipient will receive an SMS text message at a specified phone number. The text message contains an access code, which the recipient must enter to view documents from the sender. The recipient is given three chances to input the verification code. Document senders will provide the phone number to the recipient. The number provided must be able to receive SMS text messages.

      1. start by entering the phone number and selecting the country code from the drop-down list.

      2. include the area code when entering the complete phone number.

  3. Knowledge-based Authentication

    1. Recipients must answer detailed questions about themselves based on publicly available records. Users' identities are validated in real-time. This type of authentication confirms identities without requiring an organization to have a prior relationship with the user.

*Note that all three authentication methods incur a per-use fee.
