Virtual Desktop Environment (VDE)
UMBC's Virtual Desktop Environment provides access to a virtual computer lab or staff workstation anywhere there is an internet connection, just like they were sitting at a workstation on campus. You can connect to an eLumin virtual desktop through a web browser on your device. No local software installation is required.
Academic Stacks (for Students and Faculty):
Several virtual desktop stacks are available for academic use. Please see this page for a complete list of software products available in each pool.
GenLab desktops: for an all-purpose desktop with a wide range of software, similar to DoIT’s physical labs
Modeling desktops: for specialized and graphically intensive applications
Graphics and Design desktops: for our full suite of licensed Adobe products
SOSC desktops: for data analysis applications
If you are faculty using the VDE for synchronous teaching, please put in a scheduling request so that we can ensure a smooth user experience.
Professional Stacks (for Staff):
GenStaff desktops: for an all-purpose desktop with access to resources restricted to employees
Using the VDE:
DoIT strongly recommends utilizing cloud storage options like Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive to save and access files while in the environment.
