Best Practices for Maintaining VDE Performance

For your convenience, files stored on your Virtual Desktop and some application settings are retained between VDE sessions.  However, there is a limited amount of space available for retained data and, if too much is stored, your Virtual Desktop’s performance may be impacted and some applications may start to malfunction.  To avoid this, it is recommended that you periodically clean up old or temporary files from your user profile.  Here are a number of steps you can take to maintain a tidy user profile:

  • Delete files you no longer need from these locations:

    • Desktop

    • Documents

    • Downloads

    • The Home folder

    • Please be sure to back up anything you need to cloud storage before deleting the local copy

  • Empty your recycle bin by right-clicking it and selecting “Empty Recycle Bin”

  • Clean up temporary files using Disk Cleanup

    • Type disk cleanup in the Windows search bar to find the disk cleanup utility and click to run it

    • Check the box next to each item you would like to clean, then click “OK” to run the utility

    • Confirm that you want to run the utility by clicking “Delete”

  • Some applications may store or cache data in other locations in your user profile. Please be mindful about where applications are storing data (particularly when dealing with large files or data sets) to minimize their impact on your profile and identify where to look when tidying up.
