How do I modify the grading schema in the Ultra gradebook?

When an item is graded in your course, a numeric score appears as the grade by default. Grades appear in the gradebook, on Grades pages, and in your course with the graded items for students, such as assignments and tests. 

For each graded item and calculation, you can choose to display grades as points, letters (A, B, C), or a percentage with the grading schema. A schema takes the points scored on an item and compares it to the item's total points possible to derive a percentage. This percentage is mapped to a range of scores and displays a grade, such as a letter. 

You can have up to 100 grading schemas per course, giving you the flexibility you need to use the most appropriate grading schema for each assessed activity in your course. 

The Complete/Incomplete grading schema is provided to you by default as of July 2023.

Edit or Add Grading Schemas

  1. Access your Ultra course and select the gradebook from the top right menu.




  2. Select the gear icon in the upper right to access the Gradebook settings.
  3. Select Manage Grading Schemas. 

    The Letter schema is the default in an Ultra course. However, converting an Original course to Ultra might reset this schema to Incomplete/Complete.

    You can rename or remove grading schemas as needed. Schema titles have a 64-character limit. The name change appears in the Grade using menu when you create graded items and in existing graded items.


  4. Select the grading schema on the left to edit, or, select Add to create a new schema.


  5. Click the purple (+) to add a new row to the schema or click the "..." to edit or remove a row. At least two rows must remain for the schema to be valid, and you can't delete the last row.



  6. When you add or delete rows or edit values in the schema, the remaining rows and values adjust when you save. The system ensures that no numeric gaps exist in the schema. The system also displays an error message when you type an invalid number. Save the schema periodically and re-open to see your changes.


  7. Click the purple X in the top left corner of the panel to close the gradebook settings.

The Ultra grading schema will calculate grades based on the range provided. You cannot set a B to 80-89 points because the Ultra gradebook will automatically award a B as long as the student earns less than 90 points. For example, a student who earns a grade of 89.9 will be assigned a B letter grade, but a student who earns a 90.1 will receive an A.

Tip

If you're experiencing difficulty saving the Grade Schema, try removing all of the rows (you will be left with one that cannot be removed). Then, re-add as many rows as you need (using theicon) and enter the letter grade and ranges.
