Wireless Network
The wireless network at UMBC is available throughout the residence halls and academic buildings. The network uses the IEEE 802.11n and 802.11ac standards to transmit and receive data. Because the addition of privately-owned access points may inadvertently cause interference, personal (or non-UMBC DoIT) installed access points are not permitted. This includes enabling "hotspot" or "wireless internet connection sharing" from a device on campus.
There are two wireless networks at UMBC:
“eduroam” (this is the preferred network) provides access to campus network services and the Internet. All traffic is encrypted with WPA2, and your credentials may be stored on your device. The eduroam network may be used with laptops as well as smartphones.
“UMBC Visitor” does not require a myUMBC account and should be used for basic web and email access only. On “UMBC Visitor” bandwidth is limited and peer-to-peer networking is blocked. Popular file sharing programs may not work. Because it does not require authentication, this network may be an appropriate choice for networked gaming consoles and mobile devices that cannot authenticate.
