How do I use Gmail Filters?

Tell Me

Filters allow you to manage incoming messages and organize your inbox. Using filters, you can automatically label, archive, delete, star, or forward your mail, based on any combination of keywords, sender, recipients, and more.

For example, you can use a filter to automatically label or delete emails from specified senders.

To create a filter:

  1. Click the drop down arrow in the right hand side of the search box at the top of the page.

  2. Specify the criteria to define matching message (e.g. From, To, Subject, Has the Words, etc.)

  3. Click Create Filter.

  4. In the next screen specify the action to take for matching messages (e.g. Apply label).

  5. Click the blue Create Filter button.

Whenever you receive a message that matches the criteria, the defined action will take place.
