How to report a Spam email

Since Spam emails are typically not malicious in nature, the goal of reporting spam is to reduce the number of unwanted emails received by helping to train Google’s Spam filters to be more effective at detecting spam over time.

If you believe an email to be malicious, refer to “How can I identify Phishing?”.

After identifying an email as Spam, there is a simple way to stop these messages from entering your inbox again.

  1. Select the desired email

  2. Press the Octagon shaped symbol with the “!” inside. This is located underneath the search bar and is highlighted in the picture below.

  1. Click the “Report spam” button on the pop up.

Reporting these emails not only keeps them out of your inbox, it also helps Google’s Spam filter to learn from the report and automatically block emails like it in the future. Since Spam emails are typically not malicious in nature, reporting spam to the DoIT Security Department is not necessary.
