Importing Address Book from pine.gl to Alpine

This page is for importing the address book from the pine.gl server to the local client Alpine.

• Log into pine.gl with the command: ssh username@pine.gl.umbc.edu

• Run the command: pine -attach .addressbook
  This should open up a prompt to send the address book file via email. Email it to an account you can access on your local machine.

• Go to your email on your local machine and download the file.

• From here, you have two options:
  
  OPTION A: Have two separate address books, one being your default local Alpine book, and one containing all of your pine.gl addresses.
  
  
  
  OR
  
  OPTION B: Have just the one default local Alpine book containing all of your pine.gl addresses.
  WARNING: THIS STEP WILL OVERWRITE YOUR LOCAL ALPINE ADDRESS BOOK
  
  
  
  

OPTION A

1. Rename the downloaded file so you don't overwrite your local Alpine's address book.

   1. Rename .addressbook to .addressbook_pine.
      
      
      

2. Open Alpine, then select S for Setup, then A for AddressBooks.
   
   
   

3. Type A to add a new personal address book.
   
   

   Open

   

   
   
   
   

4. Leave Server Name blank.
   Folder Name: .addressbook_pine
   Nickname: Pine Address Book
   
   
   
   

5. Ctrl+X to exit and save your changes, followed by Y for Yes.
   
   
   

6. Type M to go back to the main menu, then type A to verify your address books.
   
   You should now see both the default address book and your address book from pine.

OPTION B

1. WARNING: THIS STEP WILL OVERWRITE YOUR LOCAL ALPINE ADDRESS BOOK
   
   Place the downloaded file in the same directory where .addressbook is stored.
   
   

   1. If you're on Mac, the file should be in your user directory as a hidden file. Use the command ls -a to see it within that directory.
      
      
      

2. Open Alpine and type A to verify the Address Book has your pine.gl addresses.
