Previous updates to the Ultra Experience
- Mariann Hawken
- Ken Schreihofer
Beginning with SU2018, UMBC's Blackboard will receive monthly updates as part of Blackboard's continuous delivery model. As a software industry standard practice, continuous delivery updates are small, may include maintenance, enhancements and/or new features, and are delivered on a more frequent and consistent basis.
Most enhancements are for Ultra courses, but any applicable updates for original Blackboard courses are noted in the table.
More recent updates are available here -> Ultra: What's new in the Ultra Experience?

Blackboard also implemented the Undo Override workflow on the Discussion grading interface, mimicking the Undo Override workflow in the Journal grading interface.
Mobile App | Authentication Improvements | UMBC can now define the maximum length of time a user can access the mobile app before they are required to login again. This time limit is controlled through an authentication token which allows the app to automatically renew a session without re-authentication, as long as it hasn't expired. By default, the mobile token lifetime is set to the maximum of 336 hours (about 2 weeks). The minimum setting is 1 hour. |
Additional updates for December include:
Blackboard improved performance so saving groups is now 80%-90% quicker.
For easier navigation, students can now select arrows to the left and right of LTI or SCORM items to move through learning modules.

Communication & Engagement | AI Conversations | Roleplaying is added to the AI Conversation, providing an active learning opportunity in a simulated environment. For example, a student could role play a doctor by speaking to a patient, played by the AI persona. In this scenario, a student gains practical experience in a safe environment for experimentation. As with the Socratic questioning exercise, the instructor can review the AI conversation transcript and the student's reflection. The AI Conversation is a formative assessment by default, but you’re not restricted to this option.
Accessibility | Navigation Support | Blackboard added a second skip link to the Course Content page. In addition to the current skip link to tab directly into course items, users can now press the Tab key again to skip to course information. If users don’t use either skip link, they will tab into the course features.
Assessment | Print Tests with Questions from Question Banks | Instructors can now print tests that include questions from Question Pools. Blackboard also combined the answer key and the corresponding test. This ensures that users always have an answer key that matches the test. Blackboard will generate the answer key and print it ahead of the test. The Answer Key is labeled to ensure awareness. NOTE: The system generates a different version of the answer key and test each time a test is printed when the test:
| ||
Communication & Engagement | Enhancements to discussion formatting | Improvements to the discussions include:
| ||
Reporting & Analytics | Student Activity Log | Blackboard added the option to download the Student Activity Log as a CSV. All filters applied to the log also apply to the CSV.
Mobile App | Rebranding | The Blackboard Learn App will now be known simply as the Blackboard App. The change aligns the app with Anthology, Inc.’s rebranding efforts. The Blackboard App has an updated splash screen, app icon, name, and app description.
Course Management | Batch Edit | "Change dates to a specific date and/or time" is the most popular option used in Batch Edit to change dates in a batch, so it is now the default option. This change simplifies the process for our users and helps instructors to prepare courses for teaching and learning even faster. |
Additional updates for November include:
To help with resizing blocks that are vertically tall, Blackboard modified the resize handle. Now, instructors can resize a block by selecting the vertical edge of a block. It is not necessary to place the mouse directly over the handle.
To prevent issues when uploading multiple files, students will now be required to wait for the first upload to completely before attaching additional files.
A message will display if a file exceeds the permitted size limit.
In the unlikely event that a student attempts to submit a corrupted file, a modal will notify them of the issue, and the system will alert the instructor.

September 5, 2024 (3900.100)
Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
Content Management | Redesigned Course Content page | The Course Content page is redesigned to focus content on the left and course actions on the right. Additional differentiation clarifies learning modules, folders, and content items to improve course navigation.
Content Management | Knowledge check questions blocks | Ultra Documents now includes a Knowledge Check block to enhance the learning experience. Knowledge checks allow students to engage with content and receive immediate feedback. Only multiple choice and multiple answer questions are supported. The knowledge check includes pre-populated, but editable, correct/incorrect answer feedback. Students can respond to the knowledge check as often as they like. Faculty can access metrics to show the number fo students participating, and various data about attempts, but this data is not granular to show which students and the data does not go to the gradebook.
Communication & Engagement | AI Conversations | The AI Conversation is a Socratic questioning exercise guided by AI, encouraging students explore their thoughts on a topic. The AI Conversation is configured by the instructor by a topic, AI persona (name, avatar, and personality trait) and complexity of responses. Additionally, a reflection question asks the student to share their thoughts on the activity and lets the student flag any bias or errors from the AI as part of Anthology’s Trustworthy AI Approach. Instructors can edit the reflection question, guiding the student on how best to reflect on this activity. On submission, the instructor can review the AI conversation transcript and the student's reflection. The AI Conversation is a formative assessment by default, but you’re not restricted to this option.
Grading | Overview Page | To help instructors stay on top of their grading workload, we added an indicator to the Gradebook tab to let you know when there are new submissions to grade. The indicator displays the number that needs grading. If the count goes higher than 99, it displays as 99+. We also added a new gradebook Overview tab to improve task orientation and grading efficiency. This tab contains two sections: Needs Grading and Needs Posting.
Grading | Updated Feedback Page for Students | Ultra intoduces a new student-facing submission review page for assignments. The new page makes all instructor feedback on a submission more accessible. Students can access all feedback on their submission, even if the assignment is hidden by a release condition.
Course Management | Student Activity Log | Instructors often need to review student activity. Student activity helps inform decisions in academic disputes and aids in troubleshooting. You can also analyze the course participation of students at risk. Now the Student Overview page has a student activity log. Instructors and other higher roles can use the report to check what a particular student did in a course. The Activity log can be filtered by event type and can look to the past 140 days. Any information older than that won’t be stored in this report. The following events can be found in the report:
|
Additional updates for September include:
The Wiris engine and equation editor is updated to the latest versions to improve the rendering of subscript and superscript formulas and provide a better experience for STEM courses.
Ultra added a new option to help instructors remove submissions from the grading workflow without having to delete them. When grading a student, you can now select Exclude Attempt to remove it from the Needs Grading workflow.
When enabled, the Automatic Zeros gradebook setting gives a zero score to students who haven’t made a submission by the due date. To help instructors find and grade late assessment submissions, they are now indicated as Needs Grading on the Grades and Gradable Items gradebook pages.
August 8, 2024 (v3900.98)
Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
Content Management | Content Designer (Enhanced Ultra Documents) | Instructors can create appealing layouts by dragging and dropping visual elements into columns and rows. The Content Designer is fully responsive and mobile friendly, accessible using a mouse, trackpad, or the keyboard. The first set of block types include:
All block types can be resized. Within the new Content Designer for Ultra Docs, instructors can use a menu bar to edit, add blocks, undo/redo, cancel, or save the page. LIMITATIONS: AI generated questions are no longer available from Ultra Docs with the enhanced editing tools. Additionally, third-party embedded tools using the Content Market may break. The HTML block is a good alternative for providing this type of content to students.
Content Management | Image generation improvements | AI generated images will use DALL-E 3 to generate higher quality, higher resolution images for learning modules, documents, announcements, assessment questions, and journal prompts.
Content Management | Multiple rules for release conditions | Instructors can now create multiple rules for release conditions based on multiple criteria – date, time, grade range performance criteria. You can also create rules for specific individual learners, groups, or for all members. Rules and criteria now copy from Original adaptive release settings. The supported criterion types are date, time, grade range, and memberships (individual or groups). Only supported criteria types are copied from Original to Ultra courses. These criteria types are removed automatically during a copy:
| ||
Assessments | New Assignment Interface | To create a better experience, the new Assignment page includes these improvements:
NOTE: The New Test page remains unchanged. Instructors can access all the same question types and settings options. Attempts are still automatically created when students view the test questions.
Assessments | Anonymous setting for Forms | Instructors can now collect anonymous submissions in Forms. Please note: Anonymous forms cannot be administered to Groups and class conversations are not supported. Additionally, exceptions, exemptions, and accommodations are not supported to ensure anonymity.
Communication | Follow discussions | Users can follow select discussions and receive notifications for new contributions from peers or instructors. Follow discussions replaces the subscribe to discussions in Original courses. In August, the first release of Follow Discussions, notifications are delivered through the Activity Stream. New notification options for the Activity Stream settings allow users to manage notification types for discussions:
| ||
Communication | Send messages to groups from Group Spaces | Students can now send a group message from the members page of a group space to encourage collaboration on content that they have been assigned.
Assessments | Convert underplayed tests to question banks | When an Original course is converted, underplayed tests will now be converted to question banks. This will help to declutter both the course content page and the gradebook, making it easier for instructors to manage their course materials. NOTE: During the conversion process, any random blocks, question sets, and linked questions included in undeployed tests will be removed. Question Banks do not support those features. This ensures that the resulting question banks preserve original questions without duplication.
Assessments | IP Address Filtering | Instructors can restrict an assessment by location in Ultra Course View. This restriction prevents students from taking tests outside of proctored locations or taking tests on another’s behalf. To restrict by location, select Test Settings, then Assessment Security. Select the Location restriction. No restriction is the default value. NOTE: Locations must be created by Blackboard system admins. At this time, UMBC is evaluating this functionality, pending additional settings to support accessibility and accommodations. |
Additional updates for August
Instructors will find a Next Student and Previous Student buttons added to the Students tab in Flexible Grading. Instructors can now quickly navigate between students when grading assessments.
Students can now send a group message from the members page of a Group Space to encourage collaboration on content that they have been assigned.
The response time when creating a math formula in the text editor is reduced to help instructors can process formula requests more efficiently.
July 4, 2024 (v3900.95)
Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
Assessment | Printer-friendly assessments with answer key | Instructors can now print an answer key for their assessments. A printed answer key is helpful for grading any printed assessment. The print option is available in Forms, Tests, and Assignments with questions. Printing is not yet available for question pools and mobile.
Communication | Send copy to email when scheduling announcements | Instructors can schedule an announcement for a future date and select that it will send an email copy. The announcement tool will send the email copy on the day and time the announcements are posted.
Grading | Needs Grading improvements | The Needs Grading filter on the Student tab will now only display students with ungraded attempts that count towards Needs Grading. The Needs Grading filter on the Questions tab will now only display questions with ungraded responses from attempts that count towards Needs Grading.
Grading | Audio & video feedback per question | When grading by student or question, instructors can now provide contextual feedback as recorded audio and video. Instructors can add recorded feedback to all question types. |
Additional updates for July include:
Students can view overall and attempt-level feedback from the gradebook.
Anthology made several improvements to Group Submissions page to address overall performance and reduce the load time. Performance tested scenarios in a course with 5000 students enrollments and 1000 groups:
Loading the Group Submissions page from the content item: Load time reduced from 260s (about 4.5 minutes) to 34s (87% performance improvement)
Loading the Group Submissions page from the Gradable Items gradebook view: Load time reduced from 260s (about 4.5 minutes) to 29s (88% performance improvement)
Opening a Group Submissions from the Gradebook Grades view: Load time reduced from 276s (about 4.5 minutes) to 15s (95% performance improvement)
June 6, 2024 (v3900.93)
Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Output Language Selector | To support multi-language use cases, the AI Design Assistant now includes a language selector. Instructors may use the language selector to set the desired language for generated content. This feature is especially beneficial for courses with multi-language requirements.
Assessment | Printer-friendly assessments | Instructors can now print assessments. Printing provides a convenient solution for a variety of use cases:
The print option is available in Forms, Tests, and Assignments with questions. Printing also provides the option to save as PDF. Support for question pools and answer keys is in development.
Grading | Show or Hide Graded Responses | The Needs Grading filter now filters out graded student responses by default. Filtering this way helps instructors to focus on any remaining ungraded responses for a given question. If instructors want to include graded responses, they can select Show graded responses. This selection preference is now stored per course and it persists across assessments in each course.
Grading | Private grading notes | Instructors can now add private grading notes to student grades. After a score is assigned, the new Feedback & Notes menu option is available. Grader notes form an important part of the academic record. These notes may serve as documentation for a grading decision or grade adjustment. Grader notes are private to graders and not visible to students.
Grading | Improved visibility of new grades & feedback to students | To ensure that students are aware of any new grades in the course, Ultra added an indicator to the Gradebook tab. When there are new grades, the number of new grades appears on the tab. After selecting the tab, items with new or updated grades appear at the top of the student gradebook and display a purple indicator. The purple indicator disappears and the count on the tab reduces when the student selects the item or reviews their submission. Additionally late assessments are marked with a "(Late)" label to reduce stress rather than a red label.
Course Management | Redesigned Courses landing page | The carousel for navigating between terms is removed. There is now a term selector and filter you can use on its own or with other filters. Users can set filters, make term choices, and add text searches. All of these are clearly displayed below the search box. Remove these search settings or filters to see more courses or organizations. Remove them by selecting the close icon “x” on each. Selections and filters are remembered automatically even if you log out or switch devices. Set up the pages the way you like, and we’ll keep it that way until you change it. |
Additional updates for June include:
When editing a question, instructors can now access and edit the point value field with just two clicks. Reducing the number of clicks needed to edit the point value of a question saves instructors time and effort.
Students can now return a true/false question to an unanswered state after choosing an answer. Students clear their choice by selecting the same option again. Students may need to clear their answer selection for a test question. For questions that use negative scoring, if a student is uncertain about their answer, their score may be better if they leave it unanswered.
Instructors can now post announcements as part of the drafting and editing processes. This makes the process of creating and posting announcements simpler.
Currently, at the end of the enrollment period, unassigned students are always distributed into groups. To improve the use of self-enrollment groups for optional activities, instructors can now opt out of this behavior. Instructors can deselect the option, which does not enroll students who do not self-enroll by the end of the enrollment to any group.
The member list is relocated to the selected group page rather than a separate panel. Here, users can search for members and sort them alphabetically.
May 2, 2024 (v3900.91)
Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
Content Management | Release Conditions: Multiple Performance Criteria | With this update, instructors can set more than one performance criteria per content item as a condition for releasing content (e.g., at least 80% on two specific tests).
Assessment & Grading | Add question feedback when grading | When grading an assessment by question, instructors can provide contextual feedback according to the individual question regardless of the question type.
Assessment & Grading | Improved Gradebook Navigation | Anthology replaced the grid and list view buttons with text links. The options are now:
The Gradebook will remember the last view you used in each course.
Assessment & Grading | Weighted Grade Calculation Improvements | Instructors can assign equal weights to items in the same categories. The chosen calculation method, whether proportional or equal, applies to all categories. In the past, weighted items in the same category had proportional weights. These weighted items were based on the possible points of each item. Additionally, Ultra will now display the instructor's chosen weighting option in the calculation rules panel.
Accessibility | Reduced motion setting | Ultra courses have animated elements such as panels opening and closing. Some users may prefer or need to reduce animations and motion. Many devices and operating systems have settings to reduce non-essential motion. Ultra now has added support for the “prefers-reduced-motion” feature to select animated panels. Panels will snap into place when users have configured reduce motion instead of a swiping motion.
| ||
Content Management | Converting to Ultra | When converting an Original course to Ultra, the course menu’s Content Areas will convert to Ultra Learning Modules instead of folders. This applies to Original courses as well as courses migrating from Canvas, Brightspace, and Moodle.
Content Management | Course Copy Workflow | Users can no longer push a copy from an Original course to an Ultra course to reduce the likelihood of an Ultra course becoming corrupted. For Ultra courses, instructors should always start a copy process from the Ultra course and PULL content from Original. |
Additional updates for May include:
Instructors can assign a Form to a Group and permit multiple attempts.
Instructors can reuse questions on Forms when editing or creating a Form. Once a question is reused, it can be edited as needed.
Instructors can align goals to questions within a question pool to ensure that assessment items measure the desired learning outcomes. Goals are set up by Bb admins.

Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Context picker for learning modules, assignments, discussions, journals | Instructors can now select specific course items to help define how the AI tools assist with generating content in an appropriate context. This includes learning modules for course organization and authentic prompts for assignments, journals, and discussions. When Ultra documents are selected as context, file attachments on the Ultra document will also be included as context for all context pickers.
Assessment & Grading | Default point value changed to 1 for test questions | Based on client feedback, Blackboard is changing the default point value from 10 to 1 for test questions. Any newly created questions will have a default point value of 1 instead of 10, which reduces the need for manual adjustments.
Assessment & Grading | Individual question feedback | Instructors can now provide contextual feedback by student on all question types. Question level feedback promotes deeper understanding and personal growth among students. Question level feedback complements the existing capabilities of overall submission feedback and automated feedback for auto-graded questions. Once students have submitted their tests and scores are posted, students can access both overall feedback and question-specific feedback.
Assessment & Grading | Visible feedback for Students | In the past, when an instructor selected the option to hide content, students could view associated grades but not the feedback. With this update, students will always see feedback regardless of the instructor’s release conditions settings.
Assessment & Grading | Creating duplicate questions in assessments, forms and question banks | If an instructor wants to have a question repeated with the same answer options but a different question, the new "Duplicate" option will quickly copy an existing question within the same assessment (test, assignment, form) or in a question bank. This feature eliminates the need for manual duplication and simplifies the process of creating multiple questions with the same answer options.
Communiction & Engagement | Anonymous posts in Discussions | A new setting enables instructors to allow anonymous posts in ungraded discussions. Instructors can toggle anonymity on or off as the discussion progresses. Any existing anonymous posts keep their anonymity if the setting is turned off.
Content Management | Batch Edit individual due dates & availability | Updating availability and due dates after a course copy, import, or a conversion can take time. Now instructors have the option to change the due date and availability (Show On and Hide After) for any item using the Batch Edit tools.
Content Management | Sticky Navigation for Learning Modules | To improve students' navigation in a learning module, Blackboard updated the navigation bar. Now the navigation bar remains visible as students vertically scroll through content. Students no longer need to scroll back up to the top of content to access the navigation tools. |
Additional updates for April include:
The attempt selector was relocated in the flexible grading interface to improve visibility and efficiency. Placed in the upper right corner of the grading page, a single grade pill provides a more intuitive grading workflow and prevents accidental grade overrides. This also allows instructors to switch between a student's attempts during grading. Moreover, overriding the final grade is now an explicit grading option. The overflow menu (…) is also used to clear a grade.
Instructors can create Likert scale questions with 4 or 6 answer options to allow for greater granularity in student responses. An even number of answer options also supports the creation of questions where students cannot select a neutral option.
The Attempt Log will indicate whether a student’s submission is manual or automatic. This indicator provides instructors with deeper insights into student behaviors and allows instructors to better track student progress.
The software library used to perform calculations in calculated columns and the overall course grade changed to BigFraction. When calculating an average of three assessments, BigFraction will properly calculate whereas the former software library, BigDecimal, would round down. Learn more.
Instructors can choose to include the Overall Grade for students when downloading the Ultra course gradebook.
Gradebook categories for Partner Cloud content & tools (e.g., Cengage) can be edited from the Gradebook.
March 7, 2024 (v3900.86)
Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Context picker for test question generation | Instructors can now select specific course items to help define test questions when using the AI Course Design Assistant to generate test questions. |
|
Communication & Engagement | Announcement indicator | Users will now see a number indicator next to the announcement tab in the course to signal the number of unread announcements available.
Communication & Engagement | Mark Announcements Read / Unread | Users can now mark announcements as read or unread. On the New Course Announcement pop-up, users have the option to mark the read state. Users can also mark announcements as read or unread from the Announcement page. |
Additional updates for March:
In flexible grading, instructors can collapse or expand the left panel (student cards) and right panel (feedback and rubrics). To provide a better user experience, the last used state is now preserved in the browser. Now, navigating between student attempts and across sessions provides a more efficient experience.

Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
Assessment & Grading | Forms | Instructors can now create surveys in their courses – these are called Forms in Ultra. Question types include essay, multiple choice, true/false, and Likert. You can also add text, upload a file, and create page breaks. By default, a Form is not graded since questions do not have a right or wrong answer. Form data may be downloaded from the gradebook or submission page as an Excel spreadsheet or CSV file. Surveys from Original courses will be converted to Forms in Ultra. Only questions and options that are supported in Ultra will be converted. The next phase of Forms will support anonymous submissions - at this time, Forms are associated to the learner who submits the survey in the course where the Form is created.
Assessment & Grading | Send Reminder from Gradebook | The Send Reminder scenarios are refined to ensure the recipient list more accurate. A student user will be counted and receive the reminder if they didn't submit and:
| ||
Assessment & Grading | Send Reminder for LTI Third Party Tools | The Send Reminder option is now also available for LTI and 3rd party tools with assessments in the gradebook. This functionality is only available for tools that are LTI Advantage as the tool can inform Blackboard when a student has submitted, even if they haven’t yet received a grade. NOTE: If the third party tool doesn’t support this, it is possible that students will receive a reminder even if they’ve submitted their work. The tool provider can enhance their integration to improve this experience.
Assessment & Grading | Feedback to learners for override and automatic zero grades | Instructors can give feedback for overridden tests, assignment grades, and automatic zeros. This option appears in the Gradebook grid view, and the Submissions list after the override or automatic zero is entered.
Assessment & Grading | Upload feedback for imported grades | Instructors can now upload feedback for students as part of the offline grading process. This means when you download your gradebook for manually created columns or offline assignments, you can enter grades and add feedback in the Feedback to Learner column, which will now show to students.
Content Management | Import Moodle packages | Instructors can now import Moodle packages into Ultra and Original view courses. Learn more about importing courses from Moodle for more directions. Blackboard also has a guide to help you understand the differences in terminology. |
Additional updates for February:
The Rubrics grading interface stores the most recently used display option. This means that instructors who rely on performance-level descriptions when grading don’t have to turn them on each time they navigate to grade another submission. The performance level display option preference is stored on a per-user per-assessment basis.
To ensure easy and clear access to the Audio/Video Recording Feedback tool, the recording window appears on the right side of the screen so that the instructor can view the student submission. The instructor can scroll through a student's response while recording their feedback. The instructor can maximize the recording window for better visibility.
Feedback for all attempts on a test or assignment is visible to learners in a peek panel. Students can view override feedback after grades are posted.
Instructors can view the number of missed due dates for students in the Course Activity Report. Students who trigger the missed due dates alert appear in the Course Activity report table and chart and in the downloaded report. Instructors can customize the missed due date alert in the Alert Settings. The default is set to 4 due dates. New courses need at least 2 weeks of activity to start triggering these notifications. Alerts are triggered every day in case there are new students with alerts in a course.

Functional Category | Feature | About | Ultra Course | Original Course |
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Authentic Assignment Prompt Generation | The latest update to the AI tools in Ultra allows instructors to generate assignment prompts that encourage students to engage in higher-order thinking, apply learned knowledge, justify or challenge their beliefs and ideas and emulate real-world situations. The generation process allows instructors to enter an assignment description, select a desired cognitive process based on Bloom's Taxonomy, set the complexity, and generate an assignment title. The instructor can review the generated prompts and select one to add to the assignment. After adding the prompt, the instructor can edit or further refine the prompt as appropriate.
Assessment & Grading | Enhancements to gradebook grid view | The Ultra gradebook's grid view features several enhancements to improve usability and maximize the screen real estate including improved row visibility, reduced icon size and spacing, and improved student identification such as student IDs.
Assessment & Grading | Total and weighted calculations | Expanding gradebook functionality will now support total and weighted calculated columns that can be point-based or weighted calculations. Instructors may link/unlink items in a category in the calculation or exclude categories and drop scores from the calculation. If instructors wish to define a total calculated column for their own use, they can choose to hide from students. Total calculated columns can also be used in the overall grade calculation.
Assessment & Grading | Release conditions for grade visibility | When instructors set release conditions, such as hiding an assessment, the grades are unavailable to students. With this update, instructors can set release conditions without concern of hiding grades. Regardless of the settings, students will be able to see their grades. All other functionality of release conditions is unchanged.
Assessment & Grading | Assessment attempt logs for tests and assignments | Test attempt logs provide detailed information, including the date and time of the start and answers to each question and question specific details such as a preview of the question and estimated time spent on each question. The instructor will also see the submission receipt number, final grade, and attempt grade. For assignments, the attempt logs will provide the start and submission date and time, submission receipt number. Instructors can access the Attempt Logs from the submission page or the Grades Tab under the Student Overview Page for both group and individual assessments
Assessment & Grading | Improved attempt display in Flexible Grading | If multiple attempts are permitted for an assessment, the grading interface will display the attempt that reflects the grading status and attempt aggregation. For example, if the attempt aggregation is set to Attempt with Highest Grade, when all attempts are graded, the attempt with the highest grade will display. If any ungraded attempts exist, then the most recent ungraded attempt will display for the instructor.
Content Management | Unused files tool | To help instructors understand the usage of files in their course, the Unused Files tool can find and delete course files that are not in use. Instructors can locate the Unused Files tool in the three-dot menu on the Course Content page. Instructors can download a copy of the file before deleting.
Content Management | Batch edit date and time | Using Batch Edit, instructors can override the existing date and/or time for selected items. Instructors can adjust the due date time for all assessments using this option. The same feature also works on show on and hide after dates and times. Note: Batch edit of dates/time only works with items that have pre-existing date and time values. Items without a date or time value will not have one applied. |
Additional updates for January:
A category column is added to the Gradebook list view to provide clarity for those items to be graded. The category column can be sorted in ascending or descending order alphabetically.
Instructors can use delegated grading for anonymous assessments. Sorting controls are available for submission date (old to new or new to old).

AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Instructors can generate discussion and journal prompts that encourage students to engage in higher-order thinking, apply their knowledge, justify or challenge their beliefs and ideas, and emulate real-world situations. The generation process allows instructors to enter a discussion or journal description, select a desired cognitive process based on Bloom's Taxonomy, set the complexity, and generate a discussion or journal title. The instructor can review the generated prompts and select one to add to the discussion or journal. After adding the prompt, the instructor can edit or further refine the prompt as appropriate.
Content Creation & Management | Image Button on Content Editor (new locations) | The image button was added to the content editor in Announcements, Assessment Questions, and Journal entries/comments. Faculty can upload an image using this icon or generate images via AI (limited to specific tools). Students can access the image button when answering questions on tests and assignments, creating journal entries, and posting journal comments. Students can only upload an image.Images are limited to uploading a file for image.
Assessment & Grading | In the past, rubrics were limited to 15 criteria and 15 performance levels. These restrictions are removed to allow for greater criteria to support assessment and accreditation.
Assessment & Grading | Instructors may want to set different due dates for each group working on a group assessment. With this update, instructors can assign a unique due date to each group using the exceptions workflow.
| |||
Assessment & Grading | Instructors can align goals to questions within a question bank. Question-level goal alignment ensures that assessment items measure the desired learning outcomes. Instructors can currently align goals to:
| |||
Assessment & Grading | Sorting controls (ascending/descending) are now available for these column types in the Ultra gradebook: Discussion, Journal, Group Assessment, Group Discussion, LTI, Calculations, Attendance, and SCORM.
Assessment & Grading | When using the Flexible Grading interface, instructors can apply various sorting options in flexible grading:
The grading interface stores the most recently used sorting option. If an instructor stops grading an assessment and resumes grading later, the last sorting option is applied. Also, if sorting the submissions by last name or grading status, the chosen sorting option carries over into the grading interface. |
Additional updates for December:
In the past, Blackboard provided in-context information pop-ups to support users when they used the system for the first time. These pop-ups, called First Time User Experiences (FTUEs), can be helpful to some users. At the same time, FTUEs can be distracting or unnecessary. Based on client feedback, Blackboard is removing the FTUEs across Learn Ultra to improve the users' experience and support a greater focus on the learning content.
When an instructor designs a multi-select question and allows partial and negative credit, the negative credit auto-distributes across wrong answer choices. An instructor can remove or edit the negative credit if desired. This prevents students from earning full credit when selecting all answers choices on a multi-select question with partial credit enabled.
Automatic zeros are assigned to past due work only if the student has an enabled course enrollment. Automatic zeroes are no longer applied to past due items for withdrawn students.
The Grades page in the Learn mobile app now offers more comprehensive information for students and instructors with enhancements for both appearance and functionality.
When a Canvas course with multiple grading schema is converted to Ultra, the schema will be retained.

Assessment & Grading | Safe Assign Direct Submit | Direct Submit allows instructors to submit items to SafeAssign outside of the assessment context. SafeAssign appears as an instructor tool in Books & Tools. Instructors can upload a file (up to 10 MB) or copy/paste text.
Assessment & Grading | Delegated Grading by Groups | Instructors sometimes distribute the grading workload for an assessment to multiple graders. This is a popular practice in larger classes. Instructors can assign graders to groups of students with the new delegated grading option. Each grader will only see the submissions made by students in the group(s) assigned to them. Delegated Grading can be used with all available group types. Graders assigned to a group of students will only see submissions for those students on the assignment’s submission page. They can only post grades for their assigned group members.
Assessment & Grading | Send Reminder from Gradebook list and grid views | Instructors may want to send a reminder to students or groups who haven't yet made a submission for an assessment. To make this easy, Ultra courses now have a "Send Reminder" option in the Gradebook. Reminders are sent as a blind carbon copy to non-submitting students or groups as a course message (forwarded automatically via email).
Assessment & Grading | Copying grading schemas from course to course | Instructors can now copy their custom grading schemas from Ultra and Original courses to other Ultra courses. These schemas are listed in a Grading Schemas folder on the Copy Items panel.
Assessment & Grading | Sorting controls for manually added gradable Items | Instructors can use sorting controls on the grades page for manually created items. The sorting controls enable sorting in both ascending and descending order. Instructors can sort the following information: Student name, Grade, Feedback, and Post status.
Assessment & Grading | Partial Credit Auto-Distribution for Correct Multiple Choice Answers | Ultra tests will auto-distribute partial credit across correct answer choices. This distribution provides efficiency and saves instructors’ time. If desired, instructors can edit the values if some correct answer options warrant more or less credit. Values for correct answers must sum to 100%.
Assessment & Grading | Anonymous Comments in Bb Annotate | To enhance anonymity, graders can now post Bb Annotate comments without disclosing their names. Instructors have the option to mark inline comments as anonymous when creating them or even after comments are added.
Communication & Engagement | Instructor Defined Message Settings | Messages are available by default in all Ultra courses. However, Bb administrators may allow instructors to customize the Messages options at the course or organization level. The exact customization will be determined at a later date.
Reporting & Analytics | Mobile-Friendly Student Activity Report | In addition to a student’s name and grade on the Student Activity report, instructors can view student information on small screens: Late submission indicator, Date opened, Date started, and Attempts. Instructors can download the report in CSV format from small devices.
Third Party Tools | Partner Cloud Settings | Instructors can now edit these settings for a third-party tool on an assessment or tool link. The edit settings include:
If the Partner content is gradable, the due date and grade maximum are read-only. These are only configurable within the specific Partner Cloud tool (e.g., Pearson MyLab, VoiceThread, etc.)
Upgrading to Ultra | Canvas conversion improvements | Canvas Modules convert to Folders in the Ultra Course View. The conversion created a Document inside the Folder using the same title as the Folder. The Document didn't contain any content. This also created more work for users as they now needed to delete the unnecessary Document. Now the conversion process no longer creates unnecessary Documents. |
Additional updates for October:
Students can deselect an answer choice on a multiple choice question – for example, if they do not want to guess. Deselecting a choice also allows the student to skip the question and return to it using the unanswered questions filter.
The frequency of access to Ultra courses depends on several factors, such as workload or class meetings recurrence. Previously, the default value for the "Number of days a student is inactive" was 5. Now, the default is 15.

AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Course structure suggestions | Drawing insights from the course's title, description, and contextual information, the AI Course Design Assistant generates learning modules. The tool allows for the provision of supplementary context, such as descriptive text or keywords. Instructors have the flexibility to add a title prefix (e.g., Topic, Unit) to infuse a personal touch, integrate visual elements, or fine-tune the complexity of their content.
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Learning module image integration | Instructors will find two options for integrating images into learning modules:
Images are marked as decorative by default. The instructor can untick ‘Mark the image as decorative’ and add specific alternative text.
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Rubric generation | Crafting rubrics can be a time-intensive task. The AI Design Assistant can take the helm in rubric creation, drawing cues from course context. While retaining human-centered authority, instructors can define the rubric. This includes specifying details like descriptions (learning objectives or topics), rubric type (percentage, points, or range), complexity, and dimensions. The rubric remains open to review and refine, guaranteeing the instructor's input at every step.
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Test question generation | Crafting test questions from the ground up demands a significant amount of time. The AI Design Assistant steps in to offer test question suggestions, helping instructors reclaim valuable time. This resource is beneficial for both formative and summative assessments. Instructors can refine the suggested questions by adding a description. The description might be learning objectives or topics. Furthermore, instructors can handpick preferred question types. The innovative "Inspire me!" question type suggests a variety of question types that an instructor might not typically consider. The instructor can specify the desired level of complexity and number of questions.
AI Course Design Assistant Tools | Question bank generation from Ultra Documents | The Ultra Document is a valuable way to present content. It seamlessly blends text and media components, enriching content presentation. With the aid of the AI Design Assistant, instructors can build question banks to gauge comprehension of the text-based elements within an Ultra Document. This streamlined process saves significant time. It also stands as a robust aid in shaping both formative and summative assessments. Instructors can select preferred question types or use the “Inspire me!” option. The instructor can specify the desired level of complexity and number of questions. After reviewing the questions, it’s a single click to publish the questions to the question bank.
Course Management | Search & select course banner from Unsplash stock images | The course banner image provides an important sense of identity for the course. Blackboard expands the image options for the course banner by introducing Stock Images from Unsplash. Instructors can enter keywords to search for high-quality, royalty-free images. Once the ideal image is selected, the instructor can choose the focal point of the image. The image is marked as decorative by default, but the instructor can untick ‘Mark the image as decorative’ and add specific alternative text.
Course Management | Batch edit support for items inside folders/modules | With this change, all items are now visible on a single page. Blackboard added the ability to expand and collapse Folders and Learning Modules. Instructors can now perform the following tasks much faster:
Users can select up to 100 items when performing a batch edit action.
Course Management | Copying Announcements | To support reuse, instructors can now copy specific announcements or all announcements from another course. Instructors can copy Announcements from both Original and Ultra courses. When copied, each announcement will be set to draft. Instructors no longer need to reschedule or delete announcements immediately after copying. Instructors can take their time reviewing announcements and adjusting as needed.
Accessibility | Auto-captioning for native video & audio recordings | Video and audio recordings for grading feedback and announcements will be automatically captioned including diverse language preferences.
Assessment & Grading | Flexible Grading Support for Tablets | When grading using the Flexible Grading experience from a table, only one of the side panels will be open at any time. Accessing another panel will collapse the other.
Assessment & Grading | Reminder improvements for anonymous grading | Students may sometimes complete an assessment but fail to submit it. Instructors can send email reminders to non-submitters. A banner now informs instructors of the number of students who received the email reminder. Information for any student who did not receive the email due to an invalid or missing email address is also included.
Reporting & Analytics | Progress Tracking for LTI Third-Party Tools | Accurate course progress tracking is key for both students and instructors. Some instructors include graded LTI content in their course. Now when a student submits their work, their progress status updates to "complete." This change ensures better reporting for instructors and accurate progress tracking for students.
Third-Party Integrations | Google Workspace: Cloud File Collaboration | Collaborative documents foster active engagement and dynamic interaction among participants. Instructors can now create a Google Workspace collaborative document (Google Doc, Google Sheet, Google Slide). All student members of the course can access the file with permission to edit. Note: Google Workspace will not be immediately available. |
Additional updates for September:
Activity stream notifications use the same wording as the course activity report (e.g., Student alerts: # with low overall grade, # with last access alert)

Assessment & Grading | Flexible Grading | A new grading experience with streamlined navigation, allowing instructors to grade by question or by student. Instructors can also navigate between students and multiple attempts, provide feedback with or without a rubric, grade inline with Bb Annotate, and post all grades when complete. Flexible Grading supports individual test and assignment submissions, single or multiple attempts, grading with rubrics, and SafeAssign reports. Future updates to Flexible Grading will support group submissions, peer review, multiple graders, and anonymous submissions.
Assessment & Grading | Bulk Download of Anonymous Submissions | Downloading submissions for offline viewing provides flexibility and convenience. The Download Submissions option is now available for anonymously graded assessments from the item's menu in the gradebook grid view. NOTE: To preserve anonymity, the system renames the downloaded files based on the submission receipt number. To map a submission back to a given student attempt, use the Submission Receipt lookup option in the gradebook.
Assessment & Grading | Blank Cell as Default Status in Grid Gradebook | In the past, the gradebook grid view displayed "Grade Now" in each cell even when no submission had been made. To remove confusion, the default state of a given cell in the gradebook grid view has changed from “Grade now” to a single dash. This change reduces the cognitive load on users working in the gradebook and makes new submissions more obvious. There is no change in gradebook functionality. Instructors can still select a given cell and enter an override grade.
Assessment & Grading | Increased Visibility of Move Icon in Gradebook | Instructors may need to reorder items in their online gradebooks to align with the sequencing and structure of their course. Instructors can reorder items in their gradebook from the gradebook list view. In the past, this option was not obvious to instructors. Instructors had to hover over the option for it to become visible. Now, the option to move an item in the gradebook list view is always visible. To move an item in the gradebook, select the Move icon for the item you want to move and drag the item to the new location. The order you choose is also reflected in the gradebook grid view and in students' view of the gradebook.
Assessment & Grading | Assessment Submission Receipt Improvements for Students | Based on direct feedback from students, Blackboard added the new information to the existing submission receipts:
Students can view the additional submission receipt information in the confirmation display, the downloadable text file, or the automatic email confirmation. This information is also available to faculty when they look up submission receipts.
Assessment & Grading | Rubrics - Editing Improvements | Instructors can edit any rubric not yet used for grading. In the past, selecting outside of an editable area would save edits and automatically exit out of edit mode. This made selecting text and editing rubrics difficult. With this update, if users select text inside the rubric edit box and drag out of the edit box, the edit mode does not close.
Content Creation & Management | Course Banner Image Improvements | The image setting workflow is improved to clearly mark the settings and steps to upload a banner image. The banner image can also be used as the course preview image for the Courses page. A space is provided to indicate alternative text for accessibility or mark the image as decorative.
Content Creation & Management | Learning Module Thumbnail Image | To enhance the visual aesthetics of a course and to aid in content identification, Blackboard now supports the option to add images to Learning Modules. Edit the learning module to upload and crop an image.
Content Creation & Management | Google Workspace Link to Files | A new partnership with Google provides a new integration to link to your Google Drive files. Instructors can add Google files to the course content area, Learning Modules, and folders. Linking to Google Files will allow the owner to edit the file within the Ultra course. Students will have view-only access. The instructor may need to sign into their Google Workspace account to view and select their files. After adding the Google file, the instructor can allow Class conversations to the file and align Goals and Standards. The instructor can also add a description before saving. Instructors can view and edit the Google file inline. The instructor can rename the file and control the student visibility.
Content Creation & Management | Replacing Files in Course Content | Before, when an instructor replaced a file in the course, the system created a new file version. Now, the system replaces the file. The system no longer creates new versions, freeing up storage space.
Communication & Engagement | Groups Navigation | The Groups tool is relocated to the top navigation bar to improve visibility.
Communication & Engagement | Groups Space | A new dedicated Group Space is available to users in Ultra courses. The first version of this space provides a list of all assessments by group. The Groups Management page will continue to be the central location for group lists, membership, and other group management tools. To access a Group Space, select (...) and Enter Group Space. Future milestones will include synchronous communication and project management tools for students.
Communication & Engagement | Groups Messaging | An instructor can now send a message to any group or group set. Instructors can also select more than one group as recipients of a message. Students can select their groups as message recipients. Those in the message can view the groups or group sets that received the message. Recipients can view who sent the message. The Groups page now includes a message icon that provides an easy means for messaging a group. The message auto-populates the recipient with the selected group. Users can change the recipients as appropriate.
Communication & Engagement | Unread Message Indicator | The Message tab on the Base Navigation now displays courses with unread messages first. Blackboard removed the terms feature from the Message tab because users often missed messages from other terms. This experience is more aligned with how other messaging applications work. Users can now clearly identify courses with unread messages. Blackboard also increased the visibility of unread messages within Ultra Courses. The Messages tab now includes an unread message indicator. On the Messages tab, messages are displayed with the newest messages at the top. Unread messages are clearly marked.
Communication & Engagement | Deep-linking LTI Tools from Calendar | Third-party applications can add LTI deep-linking requests to calendar entries. LTI deep linking is important for third-party applications that require user authentication. The Calendar will display links in the course. Links will also be displayed in the Calendar accessed from the Ultra base navigation.
Reporting & Analytics | Student Alert Flags in Course Activity Report | A flag will appear for students in the Course Activity Report based on the number of days a student is inactive in a course or when the overall grade falls below a specific percentage. These settings are determined by the instructor in the Alert Settings on the Course Activity Report. Alerts can be added, edited, or deleted at any time. The Course Activity Report can be sorted by flag status or filtered by students with or without alerts. A downloadable CSV file provides a column to mark these alerts. Moreover, faculty can send messages to students based on these flags directly from the report. This report replaces the Retention Center in an Original course. |
Additional updates for August:
Blackboard is removing the Welcome guidance for first-time logins. This is a series of three scrolled screens that appeared before a user reaches the base navigation dashboard. This guidance is no longer applicable. Its removal provides immediate access to the base navigation after users log in.
To streamline marking attendance, Blackboard is also removing first-time user experience messages from the attendance tool.
In the mobile app, Blackboard enhanced the course list with status indicators for each course to help users to identify the status (open, private, complete) of each course.

Assessment & Grading | Exception panel update | The exceptions panel will now features course, assessment, and student names to help instructors to ensure the accuracy of the exception.
Assessment & Grading | Add exemptions for anonymously graded assessments | Instructors can grant student exemptions for anonymously graded assessments from the Student Overview page in the gradebook.
Assessment & Grading | Send reminder to non-submitters for anonymously graded assessments | The new Send Reminder option is available for anonymously graded assessments, allowing a simplified nudge to be sent to students. Since instructors do not know which students will receive the message, this nudge cannot be customized like other messaging for known non-submitters.
Assessment & Grading | Updated assessment instructions for students | To increase clarity for students before they begin an assessment, the assessment start button displays different states based on the student's progress:
To clarify how a student can attach files or add content to their submissions, the instructions now read as follows: Drag and drop files here or select (click) to add text.
Content Creation & Management | Visible Progress Tracking Meter for Learning Modules | To provide greater clarity for students, a progress summary for Learning Modules is now displayed at the top level. The summary shows the total number of items in the Learning Module. Hovering over the progress bar informs the student of how much content they have completed, started or yet to start. A clear button shows students whether they need to start, continue, or if they have completed the module.
Content Creation & Management | Resizing image, videos and other media | Users can resize the media by dragging a corner handle or via keyboard navigation. Media types available for resizing include images, videos, and media inserted via URL.
Content Creation & Management | File deletion in course will remove files from the Content Collection | When a file is deleted from the course, it will now be deleted from the Content Collection when it is not used in other courses or another place in the same course. This will resolve many course quota issues experienced by faculty.
Course Management | Self-enroll | Ultra courses can now support self-enrollment. NOTE: Only a system admin can edit these settings.
Upgrading to Ultra | Import Instructure Canvas course package | If instructor use Canvas at another institution and wish to reuse content, they can import Canvas packages directly in Learn courses. Note: Course structure and tools differ between Canvas and Blackboard. Canvas content is imported as individual HTML pages. Each HTML page must be edited externally. Assignments and tests appear to import well, but should be reviewed. Discussions vary and may be truncated. After import, instructors or should review all contents and settings. This is to adjust the content so is suited for use in Blackboard. Not all course elements are converted. |

Send messages from submission page | During an assessment, instructors may need to communicate with students such as sending reminders to non-submitters. To support this need, instructors can message students from the Submissions page. Since student confidentiality is important, when an instructor selects more than one student as a recipient of a message, the recipients will be on BCC. | Yes | No |
Rubric improvements | Performance level descriptions are now hidden by default to streamline grading when instructors are familiar with these requirements. Instructors can choose to display the performance descriptions if needed for grading. Additionally, instructors can deselect a performance level if choosing another level of performance isn’t appropriate. Criterion feedback is also collapsible, allowing for a more streamlined view of the grading panel. Instructors can also navigate between rubric criteria with tab and use up/down arrows to select a performance level. | Yes | No |
Drag & drop desktop folder to upload content | Efficiency is key for instructors when creating course content. To assist with this, Blackboard added a drag and drop support for uploading folders with files to the course content page. Instructors may drag and drop a folder from their computer to the course content page. If an instructor drags and drops more than 25 files at the same time, a warning message appears. This message does not restrict the upload, but it informs the user that it may take a few minutes to complete. During the upload process, the instructor can cancel at any time. If the upload is canceled, the files are deleted. | Yes | No |
Instructor notes on Student Overview | A dedicated space for instructors is available to take private notes about students in each course. Only instructors, administrators, and higher roles can access them. These notes have many possible uses:
| Yes | No |
Specify how Web Links open | Opening links in a new window is generally considered best practice, especially for external websites to avoid browser security features blocking content from loading. However, there may be situations when an instructor or course author prefers linked content to open in a panel in the Ultra course. | Yes | Yes |
Prevent backtracking on paginated tests | Instructors may prevent backtracking in paged tests to ensure that students progress through the pages of an assessment in a predetermined sequence. This option will be helpful when upcoming questions provide hints or reveal answers to questions on previous pages. | Yes | No |
Improvements to manage multiple attempts | Managing multiple submissions introduces some complexity for instructors. To help, Blackboard added an attempt selector on the grading page. By default, the grading page displays the most appropriate attempt based on the “grade attempts” setting, which allows instructors to quickly evaluate and grade student work. | Yes | No |
Additional updates for May:
Improved conversion for Discussion forums & threads: When the "allow members to create new threads" setting is selected, the Discussion Forum converts to a Discussion in the Ultra Course View. If this setting is not selected, the Discussion Forum will become a folder in the Ultra Course View. All threads within the forum convert to Discussions inside the folder.
Improved conversion for Flickr mashups: Description and links correctly preserved.
Instructors may need to adjust the due dates for third-party activities in their courses. In the past, when making such changes, instructors also had to assign these activities to a specific category within the gradebook. Now instructors can edit gradebook columns for LTI-based activities without assigning them to a category. This change streamlines the process without forcing category selection.
To further enhance the hotspot question type, Blackboard added two new features: Zoom In/Out and Full-Screen view. These controls enable instructors to define hotspots more precisely. These new controls are also accessible using convenient keyboard shortcuts.

Student progress tracker reports will exclude deactivated students (e.g., when a student drops the course). The numbers in the report are aligned with the actual number of active students in the course.
Ultra developers made several accessibility improvements to the Course Activity Report to better support instructors using assistive technology.
When copying entire courses or individual items from courses, instructors may have encountered an "Oops!" error message. The message was misleading as it wasn't an error but rather a notification about exception during copy and conversion. Blackboard updated the message to reduce the association of exceptions with errors. Exceptions are for the most part changes to content during conversion.

Multiple attempts fast switcher | Multiple-attempt assessments can be more complicated for instructors because there are more submissions. To switch between attempts for a student in the past, an instructor would have to close an attempt then select a different attempt. This wasn’t intuitive and required extra clicks. Now instructors can navigate directly between a student’s attempts. If a student has multiple attempts for an assessment, an instructor will see an option to switch attempts which is more efficient. | Yes | Yes |
Deactivate discussion post | In an earlier release, discussions could be disabled by defining a due date. With this release, discussions can be turned off manually. When this setting is toggled, students can no longer edit or delete posted in a discussion. | Yes | Yes |
Gradebook assessment list view sorting controls | The gradebook list view, which displays all graded items and columns, can be sorted by these contexts:
| Yes | No |
Gradebook student list view sorting controls | Instructors can sort the Gradebook Students list view on the Overall Grade column by these contexts:
| Yes | No |
PDF version of SafeAssign Originality Report | The SafeAssign Originality Report is a valuable teaching and learning tool. Instructors use the report to ensure students express original thoughts and cite sources. Some instructors allow students to view the report. This is helpful for teaching students how to cite their work. In the past, users could download the report as PDF. However, users could not open the sources from the PDF. Now, users can open matched sources from the PDF. | Yes | Yes |
Anonymous submissions sorting controls | Record sorting provides a more efficient grade review experience. Instructors need to sort students by grade to identify submissions at a grade boundary. This helps instructors make any changes necessary before posting grades. | Yes | No |
Rescheduling announcements | Instructors have not had the ability to reschedule announcements. If the show on and hide after date fields were set for the future, a pop-up window would not generate. Instructors prefer a pop-up window because it helps students see the announcement. If there is no pop-up, a student may not know there is an announcement for them to view. Some instructors were recreating announcements from scratch to generate these pop-ups. With this update, instructors can now reschedule announcements without having to recreate them. They can do this by changing the show on and hide after fields to a future date. When users first enter a course, the rescheduled announcement will trigger a pop-up. | Yes | Yes |
Course Activity Report enhancements | The course activity page helps instructors understand students' performance. With this information, instructors can:

In this update, instructors can provide exemptions for an assessment. When exempted, a student is not expected to complete an exempted task. Instructors may exempt any gradebook item from an assessment's submission view by selecting the student's name or from a student detail view. When exempting an item, the item will not be included in the overall grade calculation, marked late for students who do not make a submission, or assigned an automatic zero. | Yes | Yes
Instructors can assign one or more questions as extra credit in an assessment. A correct answer results in adding the extra credit question points to the points earned for the assessment. Students are not penalized for incorrect answers to an extra credit question. If a student answers extra credit questions correctly, it may be possible for the student to earn a score greater than 100% on the assessment. Students can discern how many extra credit points are available on the assessment. While students are taking an assessment, they can identify questions designated as extra credit. Students can also filter the test to find extra credit questions if present. | Yes | No
Polygon shapes on hotspot questions | Ultra courses have two enhancements to the hotspot question type:
| Yes | No |
Sorting grading status in gradebook | Instructors can sort items that need to be graded in the Gradebook from the list view. The sorting controls provide temporary changes to the sort order for all columns in the Gradable Items view. The grade post status is also located in a dedicated column. | Yes | No |
Sorting grades in student view | Students can sort items in their Gradebook by due date or grades to temporarily change the order for all columns in the Gradebook. | Yes | Yes |
View members of a group | Instructors and students need to see group memberships when there are group sets. In the past, there was not an obvious way for instructors and students to see the members in a group. From the Course Groups page, users may expand a group set to see an alphabetized list of group members in each group. Users may also search for a specific group member. A future release will provide profile cards and options for messaging group members from the search results. Note: Students see only the groups and members for groups where they have membership. | Yes | Partial |

Model essay response for grading | Instructors can include a model answer for essay question, visible to instructors and graders, to ensure that they grade students’ work fairly and consistently. | Yes | No |
Randomize test pages | Instructors can randomize questions in a test that contains page breaks. Questions randomize within their assigned page. If a page contains non-question elements, the questions randomize between those elements. When there are pages for the test, instructors can also randomize page order. If instructors randomize the page order, they can also lock the first page into position. This is useful when the first page is a cover page or contains test instructions. | Yes | No |
Improvements for test question randomization | Instructors randomize test question to improve academic integrity. In the past, instructors couldn’t randomize questions if the test contained text blocks, files, or images. Now instructors can enable randomization when the test has text blocks, files, or images. The non-question elements are locked in place. The test randomizes questions between those non-question elements. | Yes | No |
Lock discussions after due date | Instructors may lock the discussion after the due date has passed. When selected, students can’t create, reply to, or edit posts after the due date. Students with a due date accommodation can continue to create, reply to, and edit posts after the due date. | Yes | Some |
Send messages to specific course roles | Students can send messages only to all instructors OR selected course members – they can no longer send messages to the entire class. Instructors can send messages to all course members, all instructors, all students, or selected course members. | Yes | Yes |
Grading workflow improvements | A variety of improvements to grading workflows and displays include:
| Yes | Some |
Display third-party tool icons in gradebook | Third-party tool icons will display in the gradebook view (grid and list), gradebook items, student grades overview, and grades tab on the Ultra dashboard. | Yes | Some |
Include non-posted grades in grade history | Grade history provides a log of changes to grades in a course. This is important in situations such as grade challenges and ensuring grading errors were not made. The grade history now includes non-posted grades. Including non-posted grades supplies greater insight into grade changes in the course. | Yes | Yes |
Additional updates for January:
For instructors, the Activity Stream includes notifications for new submissions from students. These links now direct the instructor to the Submissions List View with the "Needs Grading" filter already applied. This improves grading efficiency. The instructor can add a browser bookmark for the Submission List filter views. This provides faster access to the instructor's preferred filtered view.
The Original Course View allows instructors to choose any color for text, which may be difficult to read or not accessible. Ultra Course View has a curated set of text colors to ensure readability: black, gray, purple, blue, and green. During conversion, unsupported text colors are removed and changed to becomes black. In January, these areas are added to color correction: Journals, groups within group sets, and tests. Unsupported text colors are also removed during conversion from:
Announcements
Discussions
Assignments
Documents
Journals
Groups and Group Sets
Tests and Question Types
Text sizes are different in the Original and Ultra Content Editors. The conversion logic preserves similar text sizes to reduce cleanup. During the conversion process, text size for announcements, discussions, assignments, tests, documents, journals, and groups is preserved based on the following criteria:
If text size is less than or equal to 10, set to 10 pixels.
If text size is 11 or 12, set to 12 pixels.
If text size is 13 or 14, set to 14 pixels.
If text size is less than 17, set to 14 pixels.
If text size is greater than or equal to 17, set to 18 pixels.
If text size is less than 22, set to 18 pixels.
If text size is greater than or equal to 22, set to 24 pixels.
If text size is less than 31, set to 24 pixels.
If text size is greater than or equal to 31, set to 36 pixels.
If text size is less than 43, set to 36 pixels.
If text size is greater than or equal to 43, set to 48 pixels.
The Original Course View allows instructors to add passwords to Tests. When a course is converted to Ultra or when a test is copied to Ultra, a generated passcode replaces passwords. Instructors can view the new access code in Test settings. They may need to update references to passwords in the course.

Additional updates for December
In Original Course View users can choose any color for text. Content could be hard to read or not accessible—for example, yellow text on white background. The Ultra Course View has a curated selection of font colors to ensure readability. Users choose from black, gray, purple, blue, and green font colors. We now remove any unsupported font colors during a content copy or course conversion from an Original course.
Student Preview helps instructors experience their course contents and settings. Saving the preview user on exit retains the user in the Roster and Gradebook. Discarding the preview user on exit removes this user from the course. Previously, the two options were displayed with a default selection and a confirmation action. This was confusing. Now when exiting Student Preview, only the two choices are displayed as actions.

Students who click on the file attachment link(s) can download the file(s). With this release, instructors can set the behavior for attachments in Ultra Documents and Assessments:
The view option renders the file in the web browser without the need to download a file and open it with a specific application. Supported files include: PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OpenOffice. Office files are converted to PDF and will be cached for 30 days. | Yes | No |
Multiple attempts for group assessments | Instructors may want student groups to submit work in phases. Other instructors may wish to provide student groups with iterative feedback. With this release, instructors will now have the option to give more than one attempt for group assessments. | Yes | Yes |
Additional updates for June
The Ultra developers listened to your feedback about the “Choose at least one correct answer” clause when creating multiple choice questions -- this text was visible to instructors during question creation, question editing, and grading, but it was not not visible to students. They've taken that text out to avoid confusion.
As with Original courses, the maximum file upload is limited to 75 MB per individual file, which is generally sufficient for most individual PowerPoint and PDF files. Also, since media tends to be quite large and Blackboard is not a streaming service, audio and videos should always be uploaded to Panopto for encoding and distribution to students.

Improvements to weighted grade calculation | Some instructors prefer to use category weights to calculate the overall grade. Currently, instructors are unable to assign weight to any empty grade category. This restriction requires each category to have at least one assessment. This is not always practical, especially at the beginning of an academic term. Now instructors can configure a weighted overall grade that includes empty grade categories. This will give the instructor greater flexibility for configuring the calculation. Blackboard also added options to auto-balance weights and lock values you do not want to change. Currently, there is a warning when the weights do not sum to 100%, but the actual sum is missing. Now categories will auto-balance as the instructor sets the weights. Instructors can lock the weight for any category. A locked category is excluded from the calculation as other category weights are set. | Yes | Some |
Test question filtering | The question filter supports common test taking strategies to reduce test anxiety. Students may complete questions they know first and skip harder ones. The filter enables students to quickly return to skipped questions. Students may also use the filter to find essay questions. If a student submits a test with unanswered questions, a warning will alert the student. The alert shows the number of unanswered questions. The student may choose to submit the test or keep working. If the student chooses to keep working, the unanswered questions filter auto applies. The unanswered questions display automatically. | Yes | No |
Hide test timer | In response to student feedback, students can choose to hide the timer in timed tests. This may help to reduce pressure and anxiety during assessments. When students hide the timer, the timer icon stays visible. Students may view the remaining time as needed. | Yes | No |
Prohibit late submissions usability improvements | In February, Bb released the Prohibit late submissions & Prohibit new attempts after the due date feature. With this release, there are two enhancements:
These changes prevent instructors from triggering the submission of in-progress and saved attempts. | Yes | No |
Undo & redo in Bb Annotate grading tool | This release adds new functionality for the Bb Annotate grading tool: An "undo" and "redo" option. An instructor may undo a change and then if inclined, redo it. NOTE: "Undo" and "redo" will not apply to comments. All other annotations are included for this capability. | Yes | Yes |

Session timeout warning for Ultra courses | When a user is idle for over three hours the session ends. A user must login again to continue to use Blackboard. If a user saves a page or selects a button, the session refreshes and stays active for three more hours. There can be times a user is working but considered idle. This happens because the browser is not sending data to Blackboard:
With this release, users whose session is ending soon will receive a warning. This warning will appear at least six minutes before the session times out. If the user closes the warning before the session ends, the session will extend for three more hours. NOTE: A user away from the computer for an extended time will receive the warning, but will not be able to extend their session. When the user closes the warning, they will return to the login page. | Yes | Yes |

Course packages created after the March update will expire and auto-delete 30 days after the creation date. Users will be notified about the auto-deletion date in three ways:
| Yes | Yes |
Bug fixes address these issues:
Date picker uses the default server time zone rather than the user’s time zone: The date/time selector for course duration on course management pages uses the default server time zone rather than the user’s time zone.
Notifications are not created for some users: In the past, because of performance reasons, we omitted notifications for users with 500 or more enrollments. Now if the number of enrollments for a user falls below 500, the notifications resume. Please remember that this process will run only every 24 hours.
Unable to change course role in Ultra courses due to "Save" button disabled: Users with the appropriate privileges were unable to save role changes made in other users' profiles. The issue was that the "Save" button was disabled. This will be corrected in March.

Prohibit late submissions & new attempts after due date | Two new assessment settings are now available to give instructors more control over due dates and time limits.
Selecting "Prohibit late submissions" auto-enables "Prohibit new attempts after due date." However, an instructor can enable the "Prohibit new attempts after due date" option on its own to allow students to resume any attempt saved before the due date passes in the event there is a technical disruption during the assessment. Students who submit an attempt after the due date will have their submission marked as late. | Yes | No |
Granular Course Copy | Instructors can now select content from Original courses when copying content to an Ultra course. Previously, one had to go into the Original course and push the copied content into Ultra, which could be inconsistent in performance. This enhancement to course copy provides efficiencies and greater flexibility for reusing content. This will save time and reduce frustration when building a course. The course copy procedure and process remain the same. The Copy Content menu now includes both Original and Ultra courses. Instructors may choose to copy all or select content. If the system encounters a problem with content copy an error report will appear. The details will provide more information about why the content failed to copy. Supported content types are as follows:
| Yes | No |
User name pronunciation | All users can add text guidance and an audio recording of their name to their user profile. Users can use the text guidance to describe the pronunciation of their names for other users. Users can record the pronunciation of their name. The recording tool counts down to when the recording begins. The recording may be up to 20 seconds long. This feature is released to Ultra first and will come to Original at a later date. | Yes | No |
Changes to Force Complete in Original Courses
The Force Completion option now requires a time limit and automatic submission. Blackboard made this change to enforce the submission of incomplete or abandoned attempts. This change is important so that instructors can access and grade these attempts. Instructors may also create a multiple attempt assessment with the Force Completion option. This change ensures that students can now start new attempts in this scenario.
Bug fixes address these issues:
When a student tried to access a course that began on a future date, the student received this error: "This course has ended. You can no longer access this course." This message is now updated to provide clearer information: "You can't access this course right now. Your instructor will allow access when the course is ready."
When a student tried to access a group assessment, the student received this error: "Oops! Something went wrong. Please reload the page." Bb corrected this error. Students can now access the group assignment as expected.
Incorrect submission date on assignment submission receipt: The assignment submission receipt included the timestamp when the student started the attempt. The timestamp now shows the time/date the student submitted the attempt.
Feedback was not saved if the instructor did not click save before updating and saving the grade. This problem occurred only in Ultra courses. Bb corrected this error. Both the grade and feedback save as expected.

Point-based & point range rubrics | The new point-based rubrics in Ultra offer customized options such as varying scales, ascending or descending ranges, and totals exceeding 1,000 points possible for an assessment. | Yes | No |
Accessibility support for course banner image | Providing visually appealing courses that adhere to accessibility best practices and standards can help engage students and ensure an equitable learning experience. To ensure that all visual elements are accessible, faculty will have the option to include an image description when uploading a banner image in the course or add an image description to existing course banner images. Images can also be marked as decorative whenever they are not used as primary content. | Yes | No |
Hide groups from student view | Groups are also enhanced in the December update. A new choice to hide course groups from the students’ view gives instructors the option to use groups to discretely organize students based on their performance, interests, adopted knowledge, and other criteria. The visibility of the groups can be easily seen when using gradebook filters or conditional release. | Yes | Yes |
Granular time accommodations | When adding a time limit accommodation, faculty may specify any percentage of extra time (e.g., 15% or 80%) that is needed to honor a time limit accommodation. Currently, faculty must use a fixed percentage for for the additional time accommodation. This change provides greater flexibility to the instructor supporting both the students’ needs and the instructor’s assessment strategy. | Yes | No |
Save preferences for Bb Annotate | Instructors and graders will be able to save common preferences for the Bb Annotate grading tools, which minimizes the need to reset between grading student submissions. Note: This feature is on a gradual deployment, which means it may be released over several weeks rather than with the update on December 2nd. | Yes | Yes |
File Size Upload limit | Individual file uploads in Original courses will be limited to 75 MB to reduce impact on course quotas. The file upload limit applies to both faculty AND student submissions. Instructional Technology recommends that large files are uploaded to cloud storage and media files (audio/video) to Panopto. | No | Yes |
Bug fixes address these issues:
Issues with Discussion board and Discussion analysis: Discussion analysis showed no information and the Discussion board visible/hidden menu was too small to use. These issues have been fixed and the UI now behaves as expected, and allows for better working space.
Student assessment answers show "None given" and "saved question 0 multiple times": The access log for assessments displayed confusing and inaccurate messages. The log now displays messages as expected.
Issues with special characters causing erratic behavior: The platform was having issues interpreting some characters, causing special characters to appear in the subject of Original course messages in the global navigation updates, and the “What's New” Module. It also caused inadvertent posting of an announcement and emails sent to users to fail when an ampersand was in the course name. This behavior has been fixed and now works as expected.
Student preview does not work properly on Ultra courses: The 'Reset preview' text box was shown in white over white, which made the message invisible unless the user highlighted it. Also, selecting the 'Reset' button didn't reset the actual coursework for the student preview user. These issues have been fixed by changing the color of the text and correcting the behavior of the 'Reset' button.
Adding LTI option to the questions feedback: To give instructors more tools for providing feedback on student evaluations, the present development makes the LTIs available in the question feedback RTE. The following plugins were enabled in the automatic feedback editor: LTI content, YouTube inserts and Cloud files access.
Spacing issues on Ultra documents - Course restore: The line spacing between a heading and paragraphs was affecting legibility. After resolving the spacing issues for courses that are currently in the database, the issue remained for course documents that were restored in Ultra. The space issue was adjusted and corrected for courses that weren't in the database when the upgrader was executed.

Pronoun support | As part of planned diversity, equity, and inclusion improvements, this update allows users to express to others their personal pronouns. This fosters greater respect between students and with faculty engaging online by letting others know how best to refer to them in their group activities and discussions. The first phase of pronoun support will display pronouns to users in Ultra courses. A future release will allow for the display of pronouns in Original courses. NOTE: Support for pronouns in Blackboard will be announced at a later date. Please follow myUMBC for updates. | Yes | No |
Course banner image | As a next phase in Blackboard's work to improve overall navigation and an intuitive course experience, the course card image the Courses page can now be used as a course banner in Ultra courses. When adding a new course image, instructors can opt to make it visible within the course and are able to easily crop the image to the preferred size and zoom in or out on the uploaded image to select the part they want to focus on. This change also makes it easier for instructors to add a course schedule and for students to identify course faculty members and class meeting days, times, and location. | Yes | No |
Tables enhancements | In October tables were released. With the next update, tables have additional formatting options:
These options provide greater flexibility for faculty and students, especially in disciplines where the presentation and formatting of data is particularly important. | Yes | Yes |
Progress tracking improvements | The first phase of progress tracking required no activity in the course to be enabled. With this release, instructors will be able to enable progress tracking at any time during the term. Enabling this functionality will give students an easy way to keep track of what they have done inside each one of their courses. When enabling progress tracking later than the beginning of the term, participatory items will be retroactively marked as complete. For example, assessments submitted previously by students will be marked as complete. Non-participatory items, like Ultra documents, will still need to be manually marked by students. | Yes | No |
Bug fixes address these issues:
Needs grading didn't take effect in Ultra grade journal on 'Grades and Participation' screen: this issue is now fixed and the Needs Grading filter is working as expected.
Unable to rename file in Ultra assignment: when an instructor tries to rename a file added into an Ultra assignment, a pop up titled "Close Without Saving?" appears when the user navigates away from the page. The edit option is there for instructors to be able to rename assignment's files, and it is now working without errors.
When the search box was clear in the gradebook grid view, not all columns were restored: when interacting with the search box, the elements (students(rows) and gradable items (columns)) are filtered. Now when the input is clear (by using the X button or removing the text explicitly with the keyboard), and all elements are restored, meaning no filtering.
Completed Course was not displayed in the vertical message tab for students: this has been fixed. Completed courses are displayed in the messages tab for students.
In the Ultra Course View, students' usernames were not displayed after due date accommodation was enabled for groups, the roster or the discussions page. We've fixed the issue.
In the Ultra Course View, the entire discussions UI was freezing if a user had a lot of enrollments.
In the Ultra Course View, the Enable/Disable feature, and the Save and Submit buttons weren't behaving properly for assessments that have text questions only. The assessments were enabled in the presence of an answer, but couldn't be disabled when the answer was removed.
In the Ultra Experience, multiple options for matching questions weren't supported with voiceOver for IOS phones, and gestures didn't allow a correct interaction with controls or inputs, affecting the experience for IOS users who had voiceOver enabled and tried to select an answer in an exam or quiz.
In the Original and Ultra Experiences, whenever a tab was loaded, individual records for all modules on the accessed page were logged. While on Ultra the impact was negligible, on the Original Experience this could account for between 25% to 75% of data, slowing down the execution of reports for more relevant details.
In the Original and Ultra Experiences, some users were still experiencing overlapping issues on Wiris math formulas after the latest fix we provided. The Stix font family wasn't used when the overlapping happened. Blackboard fixed the issue for formulas created from this point onwards. Formulas created before this fix need to be modified again manually, using the Wiris editor.

Student receipts for assignments | Students need a way to ensure their work has been correctly submitted into the system. There are times where a student believes they have submitted their work when, in fact, it wasn't sent at all, or it wasn't sent successfully. This new functionality provides students with a unique tracking number that confirms their academic submission. Students can copy and save this number as proof of their work, and evidence for academic disputes. A modal window with the tracking information will appear to students after they submit their work. They can also receive an email with that information to their UMBC email, and download a similar text file to keep for their records. | Yes | Yes |
Increased rows & columns for rubrics | Rubrics are grading tools that help instructors to assess student performance and give feedback in detail. Before, Ultra allowed a maximum of 10 columns and rows. To provide more flexibility for the grading processes, Blackboard will increase the limit up to 15 columns and rows. | Yes | Yes |
Tables in content editor | Tables are a common way for instructors and students to align and organize content in a customized manner, better suited to their own preferences. For deeper versatility in the Rich Text Editor, there will be an Add Table functionality. NOTE: For this initial release, tables will not support:
| Yes | Yes |
Bug fixes address these issues:
In the Ultra Experience, when instructors sent messages to course users and then marked the course as complete, the unread message count for students wasn't reduced when message was read.
In the Original Experience, when admins copied a course with embedded LTI links within the Rich Text Editor to a new or existing course, those links broke. They were still pointing back to the old course where users of the new course didn't have permissions. Links within course copies made before this fix still need to be manually fixed. In the Ultra Course View, when creating assignments with the auto zero set on, any past due standard assignments and basic LTI links are marked with automatic zeros after their due date. However, items deployed using partner cloud were never marked.
In the Ultra Course View, in the instructor view, the help bubble icon on a discussion board disappeared once an instructor had created and closed the discussion. When accessing the discussion again, the icon disappeared as well.
In the Ultra Experience, an instructor added a SCORM package to a course content with a grade category TEST/ASSIGNMENT, and then created another test with a release condition based on the performance of the SCORM content. However, the SCORM test didn't appear for students.
In the Ultra Course View, when users tried to add content to a course by selecting the plus sign "+" for adding content, then selecting on "+ Create", a menu on the right was displayed. If the user then selected the 'X' for canceling the action on that menu, the content area didn't refresh properly.
In the Ultra Course View, students couldn't access the feedback when selecting the feedback icon in tests that used Respondus LDB, getting a console error instead.
In the Original and Ultra Course Views, instructors were required to login again to Learn, after they accessed an LTI tool and selected the Return to Learn button.

Collapsible grading panel | To help instructors, teaching assistants, and graders have a better view of the content they're grading, Blackboard widened the screen of the submission area. It also includes a collapsible and expandable panel where users can navigate through tabs such as rubrics, feedback, and originality report. Additionally, instructors and students can navigate the submission view and the panel tabs with different scroll bars. Independent scroll bars allow instructors or graders to scroll up and down the submission content without affecting the side tab navigation or the header. Now, instructors can use rubrics in a more practical way and provide feedback focused on a specific part of the submission. | Yes | No |
Partial credit for fill in the blank questions | This improvement will support those instructors who wish to grade student attempts at a more granular level. It will also benefit students based on their associated effort on these complex questions, and provide them with a more accurate representation of their proficiency. | Yes | Yes |
Show or hide "Additional Content" section in assessments | At the end of Ultra Assignments and Tests there is section called “Additional Content” where students can add text, images and files to complete their submissions or support their answers. This section was always included by default and could confuse students into thinking they needed to complete this extra requirement. Instructors would like to choose when this should be an option or not. In this release, Blackboard has added a toggle to allow instructors to show or hide the “Additional Content” section. This gives greater control to instructors over what’s displayed to their students during assessments. If an assessment only has text or support visuals but doesn’t have questions, this section will be the space for the submission and will be activated always. If an assessment has questions, this section will hold additional content, for students to add supporting evidence, and the instructor can enable or disable it. | Yes | No |
Notification enhancements | Email notifications are reminders to help instructors and students keep track of important updates in their courses. In this release, we've made an email styling enhancement to the following email areas:
To provide better context, the course ID appears now above the course name. Message content will now follow the justification that the author selected. This makes messages easier to read and allows greater customization for the author. The footer now explains when notification settings can be managed. Finally, the new general style is cleaner and should align better to user expectations. We're excited because users will receive the valuable information contained in their emails in the best possible way. | Yes | Yes |
Peer review assessment enhancements | Blackboard improved the user experience of a peer review assignment when a student is removed from a course (disabled or unavailable), and when a student’s submission is deleted during the peer review process. When an instructor deletes a student submission containing peer reviews, they'll receive a warning message, as they'll lose those reviews. The list of affected students will be visible. When grading or viewing peer reviews, the submission from a disabled or unavailable student will still be available. If a student started or completed a review on a student submission that is no longer available (because it belongs to a disabled or unavailable student), they'll see they no longer have access to it. The student can start a different review if they’d like or if asked by the instructor. An instructor can see when a student completed a review that’s no longer available, giving the opportunity to let the student know they don’t need to complete another review if that’s preferred. | Yes | No |
Bug fixes address these issues:
In the Ultra Course View, an instructor attempting to grade an assessment submission with rubrics and then cleaning the rubric with the grading's bar grading pill, was seeing the bar's grading pills empty and colorless, unlike the rubric's grading pill.
In the Ultra Course View, when changing the way students were sorted in the gradebook for a course's discussion, assignment, test or attendance, students were sorted alphabetically by first name instead of being sorted by last name.
In the Ultra Experience, within the Grade Center of a course set as Unavailable, the Last Accesscolumn was showing students as if they had accessed the course instead of showing no activity.
In the original Course View, the preview mode for the TinyMCE editor was displaying a grey background. We've updated the editor and made it transparent, for better readability of contents.
In the Original Course View, there was an inconsistency in the TinyMCE editor between edit and display modes for list items regarding their line spacing.
In the Original Course View, there were differences of color for certain HTML tags within the TinyMCE editor, between the display and edit modes.
The course cards in Base Navigation now better reflect the access state for students when viewed by instructors. There are several settings that determine whether students can access a course including the availability setting, course duration dates, and term dates. Previously, a course would appear as “private” or “open” depending only on the availability setting and didn’t consider duration or term date restrictions. Now the displayed state of a course card will consider these settings and better reflect students’ ability to access the course.

Progress tracking | Students can mark and track their progress inside their courses. Progress tracking will be initially limited to only new courses where no activity has taken place. Instructors will need to make a decision before their course has started whether they want to try progress tracking or not. Those who choose to turn the feature on will provide Blackboard with valuable input about how the feature functions to help improve it in future releases. In this first version, student preview activity counts as activity, so if anything has been done from student preview mode, instructors won’t be able to turn this feature on. | Yes | No |
Updated Navigation Bar in Ultra Courses | Ultra Course View is getting a new navigation menu! The top menu will be changed to text based vs. the iconography currently used. The top menu will be sticky – this means that it will remain visible to users even after they have scrolled down the page. In a later release, instructors will be able to add a banner image to their course homepage. Additionally, the Student Preview tool will be moved to the new header. This will allow instructors access to student preview whenever they are on any top navigation page (e.g. Calendar, Gradebook, etc.) | Yes | No |
Gradebook filltering | Gradebook in Ultra Course View is getting advanced filtering options! Filter your gradebook view by multiple variables like users, groups, items, and categories. Navigate back and forth among student submissions that are included in the selected filters. Bookmark frequently used filters to reuse in a course for that term. | Yes | Yes |
Badges | Being rewarded is a powerful extrinsic motivator. One of the best rewards is recognition for a job well done. You can reward your students with badges throughout your course to keep students motivated and create a map of what they can learn. You can award badges for the completion of a project, skill proficiency, or levels of experience. Students' badge collections can represent the key learning milestones that they met. Earned badges show a complete view of a person's skills and achievements. The Badgr integration replaces achievements currently used in an Original course. | Yes | Yes |
Calendar Hyperlinks | Given the rapid shift to online learning, virtual office hours or synchronous collaboration sessions have become quite common. Instructors want the ability to easily link sessions to calendar invitations so students can have the best opportunity to successfully find where they need to be. | Yes | Yes |
Original course Content Editor update | The Content Editor for Original Experience and Original Course View was last updated in November 2020. Since then, there have been inconsistencies in the way content is formatted when editing content and when viewing it. With this release, settings like font, size, color, and spacing are more consistent. When existing content is selected, the editor tool bar updates to display its current font, size, and header settings. This creates a better WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) experience. | No | Yes |
MS Teams integration | NOTE: This feature will NOT be available at UMBC until a patch is available to reconcile usernames and campusIDs with our email structure. The updated Microsoft Teams integration provides enrollment synchronization between Ultra courses and MS Teams class participants for up to 1800 enrollments in a course. | Yes | TBD |

Display overall grade as percentage | This enhancement allows instructors to show the overall grade in a way that best aligns to the method in which they currently teach the class. Instructors can select now between Letter (grade schema) and Percentage. The selection will apply to instructors and students in the overall grade. | Yes | Yes |
Turn off Attendance column in gradebook | While some instructors want or need to track attendance, they don't always need it represented in the gradebook. With this new feature, instructors can control the visibility of the Attendance columns and choose whether they want to use attendance as a grade or not. Additionally, instructors can remove attendance columns from the gradebook without affecting the attendance itself. If instructors want to remove attendance, now they can do so from the attendance settings. | Yes | No |
Bug fixes address these issues:
In Ultra courses, manual grade columns were lacking a Post All grades button on the Submissions page. A Post All button is now present there for instructors to use.
In Ultra Courses (and upcoming courses), Organizations, and Grades pages went blank on Safari, when the zoom was below 100%. Now, the pages display the courses the user is enrolled in.
In the Original courses, the Content Editor wasn't loading randomly. Now, the Content Editor loads in all use cases.

Rubric feedback by row criteria | Feedback by criterion will be available wherever rubrics appear, like discussions, anonymous assignments, single and multiple attempts assignments, among others. With this addition to rubrics, segmented feedback provides more flexibility and detail to feedback provided by instructors grading an assignment. When using the parallel grading workflow, the option will be available to all graders, but only the reconciler's feedback by criterion is visible to students. The workflow remains around rubrics, and thus, feedback inside rubrics for the delegated workflow will remain the same. | Yes | Yes |
Right to Left Support | Full Right to Left language support will be available in Ultra courses:

Audio/video recording for course announcements | Instructors can insert a brief (5 minutes) audio or video recording into an Ultra course announcement. | Yes | No |
Peer Assessment enhancement | Notifications: Students and instructors can learn about relevant changes in submissions via the Activity Stream. Instructors get notifications when new reviews arrive, and students get them when their reviews are graded. Batch Edit: Instructors can edit peer review items in batches. They can adjust the due date of separate items at the same time by delaying or advancing the date in a given batch. | Yes | No |
Bug fixes address these issues:
In the Ultra Experience, when Ultra Stream Notifications were sent to a specific, targeted role, the system announcement was sent correctly to the specific users with that institution role, but the Admin Announcement UI indicated the notification was sent to everyone. causing confusion for admins.
In the Ultra Experience, in tests, the student's browser needed to be refreshed manually in order to show them tests hidden by conditional availability, even after these conditions were met.
In the Ultra and Original Experiences, there were software updates related to server performance causing customer email alerts: Administrators were receiving Failed to Phone Home emails for software updates on SaaS environments. They will no longer see those emails. Also, as part of this change, the Update Status column has been removed from the Installed Tools page for Building Blocks.
In the Original Experience, after a Learn user had disabled their profile image from view, other users were still able to see it as it remained publicly available.

Drop grades | Instructors and other privileged roles will be able to decide if they want to add additional rules to how their overall grade is calculated when using calculation by categories. They'll be able to drop as many grades as they want (lowest/highest), as long as there are more items inside the category than dropped items, or to choose just the lowest or highest grade to be considered for that category. This feature serves a great variety of use cases, for instance, to help students at the end of the term or to remove outliers (highest/lowest) grades in order to get a better sense of students’ performance. When rules are in place, students can gain access to their overall grade calculation details and see if some additional rules have been set by their instructors, which gives them clarity on how their grades are calculated and why their calculations might defer from the ones displayed in their gradebook. | Yes | Yes |
New message indicator | At a glance, all users will know when they receive new messages through a Blackboard course or organization. The new message indicator appears as a number inside a circle on the Messages tab, which is located on the Ultra dashboard's left navigation menu. This badge changes to a solid circle when users click on the Messages tab to view the list of messages, aggregated by course. | Yes | Yes |
Proctoring Services Framework | By leveraging and certifying against the very latest IMS LTI Proctoring standard and combining this open standards based approach with Blackboard’s own Premium APIs, Blackboard developed an extensible framework allowing partners and clients to build and deploy their integrations into the native test settings of the Ultra Course View. Blackboard is the first and currently only LMS provider to be certified against this latest Proctoring specification. | Yes | No |
Pin Collaborate videos (coming May 13) | With this month's Collaborate update, attendees can pin videos so they are always in view. When you pin a video, it moves the video to the top of the list and pins, or anchors, it there. It doesn't change the number of videos you see, just the order you see them in. NOTE: Only moderators can see more than 4 videos at a time. | Yes | Yes |
Bug fixes include:
In the Ultra Course View, when an assignment was created with Anonymous Grading, some daily notifications and digest email received after submissions were made, contained the names of the students who have submitted them. Bb fixed the issue.
In the Original Course View, in tests, some calculated numeric questions were wrongly marked as correct when the student introduced a combination of numeric values and letters in an answer that should be numerical only. Bb fixed the issue and added a further explanation on the Help pages regarding supported types of input for scientific notation, units and constants.
In the Original Course View, when recipients were selected for an enterprise survey response period, there was no way to identify or exclude child sections of merged courses, which caused some students to receive two copies of each survey. Bb fixed the issue.

Conditional availability by member or group | Instructors will be able to grant differentiated access to content based on their ultimate goals. As a new option to the conditional availability rules already present in Ultra courses (date/time and performance-based rules), faculty can now allow certain students to have access to specific content while selecting one or both existing rules mentioned above. This new feature will be an incredible addition to those who want to create remedial paths to certain students, give different content to undergraduate and postgraduate students in a course, among other use cases. | Yes | Yes |
Assignment with Peer Review for Qualitative Peer Assessment | Peer assessment is a practice becoming more common because it encourages development of students’ critical thinking abilities, gives them practice in critique of others in a professional manner, and allows for measurement of students’ analysis and communication skills. With this release, qualitative peer review can be enabled for an Assignment in the Ultra Course View. It’s simple for instructors and students to use, and has the following features:
As this is a first release of the Peer Review option for Assignments, there are some relevant use cases that aren’t part of this development, but are planned as future improvements. Please watch the FAQs and myUMBC for additional information. | Yes | Yes |
Improvements to the Ultra content editor | In the Ultra Experience, the Rich Text Editor improvements are related to paragraph format change and allow the creation of more rich and customizable pages. These include: Clear formatting, text alignment , line height , and undo. | YES | N/A |
Embed LTI Content in Original courses via content editor | In Original courses, appropriate LTI course tools will appear for instructors, course builders, teaching assistants, and students in the Add Content menu as additional tools alongside existing mashup tools. Two methods are supported: either the tool can add a link in the editor, or if the tool designates that the resource should be embedded, it will be inserted into an iframe in the Content Editor and rendered automatically. | N/A | YES |
Disable notifications for users with high enrollments | Typically, users enrolled in so many courses are support staff or instructional designers. Some faculty course coordinators or department chairs may also find themselves enrolled in large numbers of courses. With this update, Blackboard improved the timeliness and performance of notifications for all users by no longer generating these notifications for users with more than 500 enrollments. This includes emails, push notifications, and the Activity Stream.A user with this large volume of course enrollments will still have access to all course resources but won’t receive notifications regardless of their settings. | YES | YES |

Password-protected assessments | Instructors can now add a system-generated password to their assessments in the Ultra Course View. For the initial release, passwords can only be generated randomly (passwords can't be customized) and instructors must provide the password to students. Instructors can also regenerate the password when needed. Test facilitators will be able to see the password, but won't be able to change it. Students must enter the password each time they start or continue an assessment. They will need to get the password from their instructor or test facilitator, and will not have a way to discover the password on their own. Students will not need the password to access their grades and feedback. | Yes | Yes |
Send announcement via email | To ensure Ultra course announcements reach as many students as possible, Blackboard added the ability to send course announcements by email. Instructors can also send a copy to their own email. Announcements that are scheduled will not have the option to send in email. | Yes | Yes |
Student list view in gradebook | Blackboard added a new view option to improve gradebook performance in courses with very large enrollment numbers. With the student list view option, instructors can see a row for each student instead of a row for each gradebook item. Additional information is incorporated into this view: Last access date, student, and user ID. The initial release will allow instructors to view all the gradebook items for a student by selecting their name. From there, instructors can grade and give feedback on submissions for that single student. The next improvement for this feature will include additional filtering and sorting options, messaging, and accommodation options within the student list view. This view will not affect any current workflows that instructors use today. | Yes | Yes |
Secure recording links in Collaborate | As part of Blackboard's commitment to security and privacy, public access to recordings is now off by default for new sessions. Only session owners and students enrolled in the course can see the recording. Any links shared to the recording will no longer work when the recording is secure. When public access is off, the recording is secure. Instructors can choose to allow public access in the Recording Settings. When the Public access check box is selected, a shareable link to the recording is available. Anybody with the link can view the recording while public access is allowed. If the instructor clears the Public access check box later, the shareable link will stop working. NOTE: Only recordings made after the September release have public access turned off by default. All previous recordings have public access on by default. You can change the access for earlier recordings in the recording settings.
