How do I send a link to a file using Box?

Tell Me

  1. Navigate to the file you wish to send a link to.

  2. To the right of the file, click Share.

  3. In the box that appears, a link to the file that you can share will be generated. You can also click the Send button to directly email a link from within Box.

Box offers several options to limit access when sharing a link which can be selected by clicking the drop down below the link which will allow you to select an access type.

  • People with the Link - Anyone with the link can access the file. No log in is required.

  • People in your company - Only users with a UMBC Box account that have the link or collaborators can access the file.

  • People in this folder - This file is in a private folder and will only be available to collaborators you've invited to access the file.

  • Remove Link - No shared link will be available for the file.

After selecting one of the options below, you will also have the ability to select a few more restrictions by clicking the gear icon:

  • Custom URL - Allows you to change the link to the file so that it is not a random string of letters and numbers. Your link will be in the format "https://umbc.box.com/yourtexthere".

  • Link Expiration - Allows you to set an expiration date on the link after which it will be unavailable to those who've been given the link.

  • Allow Viewers to download - Choose whether you want to allow those you've shared the link with to be able to download and/or preview the file.
