Circulation Student Manual - Absences, Time Off, and Closures

Weather & Emergency Closures

There are four sources of information regarding campus closure due to weather or other emergency conditions:

The message will be one of the following:

  • “UMBC is closed” – this means that the library is closed.

  • “Classes are cancelled” – this means that the library will still be open.

  • “The campus will open/close at X o’clock” – the time given applies to the library as well.

  • No message – the campus is open as normal.

If the library is open, but you don’t feel that you can safely get to work due to the weather, call Circulation (410-455-2354) to let us know.

If the library decides to close independently of the campus, we will contact all students scheduled to work that day by phone or email.

The UMBC Inclement Weather / Emergency Closing Policy is available online at: http://www.umbc.edu/facultystaff/inclementweather.htm

Scheduled days off

If you need to take a day off, let your supervisor know as soon as possible, via phone, email, note, or in person. You should try to find another student worker to cover your shift. You can do this by posting a Help Wanted sign on the bulletin board. If the shift you can’t work is in the near future (a week or less), it is better to ask other student workers in person or by email. You should have an up-to-date list of the phone numbers and email addresses of the other student workers – please ask for one if you do not.

If you know that you will need a day off, please let us know in advance instead of calling out!

Calling out

If you need to call out due to an illness or emergency, call Circulation (410-455-2354) or your supervisor (410-455-6875) as soon as possible. If you talk to somebody other than your supervisor, please ask them to leave a not on your supervisor's desk.

If you ever need to leave work before the end of your shift, remember to let a staff member know, and leave a note on your supervisor's desk before you leave.
