What is the difference between "Graduation" and "Commencement Ceremony"?

"Graduation" and "Commencement Ceremony" are two different steps in the graduation process at UMBC. "Graduation" means the actual completion of all requirements for your degree, resulting in a diploma and notation on your official transcript. In other words, "Graduation" is the technical attainment of credits to receive a degree.

"Commencement Ceremony" is the symbolic ceremony marking the closing of your academic career and recognition for your hard work and accomplishments at UMBC. It is an opportunity for you, your family, friends, and the campus community to celebrate all that you have done.
