How do I make a course plan?

Tell Me

Students are encouraged to make a plan of courses to take in future semesters and to review this plan with their academic advisor. The best place to start is by reviewing your Degree Audit to see which degree requirements have not been met yet. (If you are considering changing majors, use the What-If Degree Audit instead.) The Academic Pathways will give you a sample four-year-plan for your major and many departments offer degree planning worksheets - check with your Academic Advisor or department office.

When making your plan, keep the following in mind:

  • Some classes are only offered once per year (spring or fall) or have an irregular schedule. To find when a class is typically offered, check the Degree Planner or check with the department that offers the course. Be aware that this information is for planning purposes only and is not a guarantee that the course will run.

  • You may consult the Schedule of Classes for the prior spring or fall to see what courses were offered that year.

  • Check that you will meet the course prerequisites/corequisites by the time you intend to take the class. You can find these listed in the Course Catalog and in the course details in the Schedule of Classes under Enrollment Requirements. Your academic advisor can help you navigate the sequencing requirements for your plan.

  • Review Finish 15 for tips to graduate on time.

For the upcoming semester:

  • You should identify classes that will count toward your degree requirements and that you are eligible to take (meet the prerequisites.)

  • Plan to take enough credits to meet financial aid or other requirements.

  • Pick some extra classes so that you have alternatives in case a course is not offered, is not offered at a time you can take it, or fills before you can register for it.

  • When the Schedule of Classes becomes available, check the course offerings for the semester and build a class schedule.

  • Plan to register for classes at your first opportunity. The sooner you register, the more classes and times are available, and you have more time to make adjustments if you are not able to get your ideal schedule.
