How do I setup Mozilla Thunderbird to read UMBC Webmail?

 Mac
  1. Launch Thunderbird.
    • If this is the first time you are launching the program, the Mail Account Setup window will appear.
  2. Click Cancel.
    • If the System Integration window pops up, click OK.
  3. Click on Tools which is in the Menu Bar of the e-mail client window.
  4. Choose Account Settings and the account settings window will appear.
  5. Click on the Account Actions button and select Add Mail Account... from the drop-down menu.
  6. Enter your full name in the Your Name box.
  7. Enter your myUMBC e-mail address in the Email Address box.
  8. Type your myUMBC password in the Password box.
  9. Click the Continue button.
    • Thunderbird will attempt to automatically acquire your settings.
  10. Click the Stop button.
  11. Enter imap.umbc.edu in the Incoming box.

    1. Set the drop-down menu to IMAP.
    2. Type 993 in the next box.

    3. Set the drop-down menu to SSL/TLS.


  12. Enter smtp.gmail.com in the Outgoing box.
    • Enter 587 in the next box and set the drop-down menu to STARTTLS.

      Due to recent issues involving spamming, we recommend configuring your mail client with the following outgoing server configuration. This will ensure your sent mail does not get caught by any sites that have blacklisted our mail servers for spamming.

  13. Click Manual Set-up.
  14. Click on the OK button to finish configuring your e-mail settings.
    • You will return to the main Thunderbird e-mail window. In the left column of the window, you should see the name of the e-mail account you just created.
  15. Click on the arrow symbol to the left of the account name to show the Inbox folder for your account.
    • Your e-mail messages and any e-mail folders you have will soon appear. You can now use Mozilla Thunderbird to send and receive e-mail messages.
 PC
  1. Open Thunderbird.
    • After Thunderbird opens, a Mail Account Setup window will pop-up.
  2. Enter your name, myUMBC email address, and password.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Click the Stop button when Thunderbird tries to find your mail settings.
  5. Click Manual Setup... button.
  6. Select IMAP server type as incoming server connection.
  7. Verify the information within Server Settingsdialog box is as follows:
    • Server name: imap.umbc.edu.
    • Port: 993 if using IMAP.
    • User name: myUMBC username.
    • Connection Security: SSL/TLS.
  8. Go to Outgoing Server (SMTP)settings:
    • Hightlight umbc.edu (Default) and click Edit button.
  9. Entering the following information:
    o Description: UMBC SMTP.

    • Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
    • User Name: username@umbc.edu (You must use your FULL UMBC email address.)
    • Password: your account password
    • Port: 587
    • Connection Security: STARTTLS
  10. Click OK button,
  11. Click OK button to exit Account Settings" screen.

You are now ready to interact with your account. Click Get Mail button.
