How do I setup my Android to connect to my UMBC legacy email (Cyrus)?



The following instructions are for non-Gmail accounts. For Gmail accounts, visit How do I setup my Android Phone to read UMBC Gmail?

  1. Open Email on the home screen. 
If you already have other email accounts set up on Android, press the menu button (between the home and back buttons on the phone) and select Settings > Accounts. Select Add Account (select More Settings to find Add Account, if necessary).

  2. Select Personal (IMAP) as the account type. You may need to select Manual Setup, and then IMAP account in the bottom left-hand corner.

  3. In the Email address: field, enter your full UMBC email address - username@umbc.edu.

  4. In the Password field, enter your UMBC email password.

  5. In the Username field, enter your full UMBC username only (do NOT include @umbc.edu).

  6. In the IMAP Server field, enter imap.umbc.edu.

  7. Change Security type to SSL Port will automatically change to 993.

Leave the IMAP path prefix field blank.

  9. Hit Next. You will briefly see the "Checking Incoming Server Settings" screen.

In the SMTP server field, enter smtp.umbc.edu

  11. Change Security type to SSL, and in the Port field, enter 465. 


  12. Make sure that Require sign-in is checked.


  13. The "Username" and "Password" fields should already be filled. If not, enter your information, as detailed in steps 4 and 5 above. 


  14. Hit Next. You will briefly see the "Checking Outgoing Server Settings" screen.


  15. Next to "Email checking frequency", select how often you would like your phone to check for new messages.


  16. Next to "Give this account a name (optional)", you can enter a name like UMBC Email or your full UMBC email address.

  17. To receive a notification when you receive email, check Notify me when email arrives.
 In the "Your name" field, enter your full name.


  18. Click Done.
