Continuing & Professional Studies (CPS)

CPS non-credit programs will be incorporated into the student platform of record for the first time in UMBC's history via the implementation of the Continuing Education Career, or "CNED" Career.

In Phase One of the campus project, the English Language Center's (ELC) Intensive English Program (IEP), a major ESOL training initiative, will begin processing admissions, registration and billing on their student population via the Student Administration (SA) platform.  SA will replace the home-grown EOA (ELC Oracle Application), and significantly expand the capabilities of reporting, tracking and integrating students within the related functional areas.  For example, Undergraduate Admissions, the Graduate School, Residential Life, Student Health Services, Food Services and other areas of the campus that historically serviced these students, will now be integrated into the same platform, eliminating duplication of student records and the need for workarounds and shadow systems.  Transcription, invoicing, obtaining student identification, and access to campus services (i.e. Library, Gym) will be automated/integrated for the first time.

CPS will also benefit, as a population of interest, in the implementation of the GRAD and UGRD careers, given CPS's responsibility for select applied graduate programs, and Summer and Winter Sessions (see Admissions and Records).  SA will revolutionize the flexible registration and billing needs that characterize the unit.

Progress to Date

CPS has actively participated in the functional reviews and prototyping/configuration activities of the last year for all three Careers.
Within the CNED Career, CPS has established an Academic Calendar and Term/Session model, populated a complete course catalog of ELC offerings, and built a complete Schedule of Classes for the Summer 08 term.  In late April, CPS will begin the admissions and registration of representative student models for Summer 08, as an initial beta testing of the system's functionality.

Personnel

The CPS SA team includes:

  • Doug Kendzierski - Functional Lead; Associate Vice Provost,
  • Steven Harris - Technical Lead;  Director of Systems & Technology.

Both Doug and Steve allocate 50% of their time to the project.  Doug and Steve rely on the active participation of CPS' functional users, including the staff of the ELC, the Program Management Staff of CPS, the Special Sessions Team, the ISD Program (as a representative applied graduate program) and the Financial Services Unit of the Division to ensure a comprehensive perspective on implementation.

Updates & Timeline

CPS will participate in the campus' Admissions, Records and Student Billing timelines for the GRAD and UGRD Careers, commencing with the CPS' administered Summer Session of 2009.  SA will be thoroughly tested throughout the 2008-2009 school year, with a broad representation of CPS programs and student profiles.   It is anticipated that processing of the CNED Career will launch within a comparable or accelerated timeline.
