Student Financials

Student Financials

What impact will SA have on Student Financials?

  • Integrated SA system will replace independent Administrative Systems like SAR, SIS, and SAFERS, used by various departments like the Bursar's Office, Financial Aid Office and the Registrar's Office.
  • Seamless flow of information across departments, colleges and campuses.
  • Increased automation will enable faster data processing and ensure accuracy.
  • Offers an array of flexible Tuition Calculation options, which will help UMBC calculate tuition charges more efficiently for students with varying needs.
  • SA will support "On Line" and "In Line" business activities.
  • Charges and payments will be posted to students' accounts almost real time.
  • Some External Organizations pay tuition charges for their employees. UMBC used another PS Application for billing those external organizations. SA will integrate that functionality and eliminate the need for using another application.
  • Integrated system will help improve the quality of customer service and will help increase Recruits and Retention of students.
  • An array of services will be offered through Student Self Service Portal. Parents will also have separate "log in" capabilities for their children.
  • SA offers solutions to our future eCommerce needs and supports growth potentials.
  • Will enable us to communicate with the student and parent populations more effectively via targeted email notifications.
  • Streamline, Reduce or eliminate various back office functionality.
  • Offer user-friendly portals for students to check their bills / statements or make from the convenience of their own homes.

 Challenges (potential negative impacts):

  • UMBC implemented PS Finance, HR, Project and Grant module back in 2003. SA will have to be able to interact with these systems seamlessly.
  • Staff and Faculty members across campus will have to embrace a new system and quickly get adapted to some business policy /  procedure changes.
  • Training will have to be provided to staff, students and faculty members on a regular basis.

Progress

Student Financials is in its' Prototyping Phase. The team is currently meeting with various departments to discuss their existing business processes, assessing their unique billing needs, assessing limitations of their existing systems, making suggestions and offering solutions from SA, setting up multitude of underlying tables, assigning values, and running tuition calculations for various student groups.
