Getting Started with Advising & Registration
Before You Begin...
Are you new to Advising Students? Whether you are an Orientation Advisor or a faculty who is new to Advising we have a list of the common navigation for you to get started with your Advising duties and to sign up for Advising Groups.
Step by Step
What do you need to do? | Navigation | Additional Information |
---|---|---|
Locate a Student's Campus ID number | From myUMBC, navigate to Topics > Faculty Center > Person Lookup (located in the Admin Section of the page.) Alternately, you can click this link http://www.umbc.edu/search/directory/advanced/. | If you are meeting with the student, you can ask them for their ID number. The student's RED ID CARD has their campus ID printed on the front of the card. Use this path if the student does not know their ID or if you are not with the student at the time of your action. |
Provide Advising Authorization | From myUMBC, navigate to Topics > Advising & Student Support > Advising Authorizations | Students cannot register for classes until they are granted advising authorization from their Academic Advisor (or Orientation Advisor). Ensure you are providing clearance for the appropriate Term. Use the arrows to scroll between Terms as required. |
Open the Advising Center | From myUMBC, navigate to Topics > Advising & Student Support > Advising Center | The Advising Center is the single location to manage all advising activities. You must search for the student (Campus ID) prior to performing any actions in the Advising Center. |
Run a Transfer Credit Report | From myUMBC, navigate to Topics > Advising & Student Support > Advising Center | The transfer credit report is used to identify the classes transferred from one institution to UMBC. The report identifies which classes were accepted by UMBC and how many credits were received for each class. |
Run a Degree Audit Report | From myUMBC, navigate to Topics > Advising & Student Support > Advising Center | The degree audit report allows you to see the specific graduation requirements by major and how the student is progressing towards graduation. This report is beneficial as you guide students toward enrolling in the appropriate classes for each Term. |
Enter Advising Notes & view Advising History | From myUMBC, navigate to Topics > Advising & Student Support > Advising Center | Advising notes are the record of conversations and recommendations provided to students both during the advising period as well as office visits. The advising notes for a student can be viewed by all advisors. Only relevant advising information should be included in the notes (Newspaper Headline rules apply). |
View the Schedule of Classes | From myUMBC, navigate to Topics > Classes & Grades > Schedule of Classes | The schedule of classes can be used to help the student search for the appropriate class for his/her schedule. |
