How do I enroll my first device with Duo?

If you are required to use multi-factor authentication, you will be automatically prompted to enroll the first time you log in to myUMBC.

Follow the steps below for a walkthrough of this process.

1. Log in to any UMBC application that requires WebAuth, for example, myUMBC.

2. After you enter your password, you will see the Duo Security introduction. Click “Get started” and “Next” twice to advance through the introduction and learn why protecting your identity with two-step verification is important.

3. Next, Duo will ask you to choose a verification option. You can use one of the following, though UMBC recommends using the Duo Mobile app. The instructions below will show how to add a device using Duo Mobile.

  • Duo Mobile: Use the Duo Mobile App on your mobile device to confirm when you log in (Recommended).

  • Security Key: Use an external device (connected to a USB port) to confirm when you log in (Not recommended).

  • Phone Number: Use SMS to confirm when you log in.

Once you enroll a device, you will need to have access to it in order to log into many UMBC resources.

4. If you choose Duo Mobile, you will be asked to provide your mobile phone number.

5. If you entered a phone number, double-check that you entered it correctly and click

  • Yes, it's correct to continue or

  • No, I need to change it to go back and enter the number again. This will take you back to the previous screen.

6. Confirm your mobile phone number by entering the passcode send to you by Duo.

7. On your mobile device, download the Duo Mobile app. You can use the links in the prompt to see the app in the Apple App Store or Google Play store.

8. Once you have downloaded the app, click Next.

9. In the Duo Mobile app, select “Use QR code” and scan the code shown in your browser.

10. After you have activated the account in the mobile app, confirm the account name as 'UMBC' and continue. (This is used to distinguish your UMBC login from other websites with which you may use multi-factor authentication).

Your browser will automatically update to show that the new device has been added. Click “Continue” to proceed.

11. At this point, our new device has been added. Click “Skip for now” to continue with the process. We will not activate a security key.

12. Setup has been completed! Click “Log in with Duo” to continue.

13. Duo will now attempt to log you in for the first time. If you are using Duo Mobile, open the app on your phone.

You will see a prompt to confirm your login, as well as:

  • The location of the login attempt

  • The time of the login attempt

  • Your username

Confirm that the login is you by tapping the green check button.

14. Duo will now ask if the device through which you are attempting to authenticate is your device.

  • If you are not the owner of the computer or device you are using to log in, click 'No, other people use this device'.

  • If you select 'Yes, this is my device', Duo will skip multi-factor authentication for this device for the next 30 days.

15. You have now completed enrollment and logged in successfully.

The next time you log in to myUMBC, or any other UMBC site that uses webauth, if you selected 'Yes, this is my device', Duo will automatically skip multi-factor authentication.

Otherwise, Duo will prompt you to confirm your login using the same multi-factor method you registered with. For example, if you registered using the mobile app, Duo will prompt you to confirm using the app.
