Circulation Student Manual - Shelving

Shelving is your most important duty. You will be expected to shelve at least one cart for every shift you work, as long as there are carts to shelve. You should strive for accuracy when shelving books. Remember – a mis-shelved book is a lost book! It’s better to work slowly and accurately than to work quickly but make mistakes.

When shelving, please keep the following in mind:

  • Always take the oldest cart available.

  • When you put a book on the shelf, check the call numbers of the five books on either side of it to make sure that they are in order, as well. Correct any mistakes that you find. If you notice that a section is drastically out of order, let your supervisor know.

  • Always align the spines of books with the front of the shelf.

  • If a shelf is too full for a book to fit, try to shift to make room for it. If this can’t be done without major effort, talk to your supervisor. Never remove a bookend from a shelf, or place a book to the right of a book end or on top of other books.

  • Re-shelve any books you find laying on the floor or on the end of a shelf.

  • If you can’t finish your cart before the end of your shift, bring it back down to Circulation. Don’t leave book carts in the stacks.
