How do I update my mail client or mobile device after changing my password?

If you've recently changed your myUMBC password, you'll need to update your password on any mobile device or mail client you've set up to access your email as well. Many devices and mail clients will prompt you to update your password if they are unable to connect. If this does not happen, you can update the information manually using the instructions below.

 Android
  1. Tap on the Menu button on your device. It's usually the one to the left of the Home key.
  2. Tap on Settings.
  3. On the Settings screen, scroll down and select Email.
  4. On the email screen, select Settings.
  5. Select the account you want to update.
  6. Scroll down to and select Incoming Settings.
  7. Tap inside the Password field and update your password.
  8. Go back and repeat the process with the Outgoing Settings field.
 iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
  1. Select the Settings icon from your home screen.
  2. Scroll down to and select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Selec the account you wish to update.
  4. On the next screen, tap Account listed under IMAP.
  5. Update the Password field under both Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server.
 Apple Mail
  1. Select Preferences from the Mail menu in the menubar.
  2. Select the Accounts tab.
  3. Select the account you wish to update.
  4. Update your password in the Password field.
  5. Select Edit SMTP Server List... from the drop down menu next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
  6. Click Advanced
  7. Update your password in the Password field.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close the Accounts window. You'll be asked to save changes. Be sure to click Save.
 Microsoft Outlook (Windows)
  1. From the File menu in the top left hand corner, select Account Settings.
  2. Click Account Settings again.
  3. Highlight the account you want to change the password on.
  4. Click Change and enter your new password in the Password field.
  5. Click Next, and then Finish.
 Microsoft Outlook (Mac)
  1. Select Preferences from the Outlook menu in the menubar.
  2. Select Accounts
  3. Select the account you wish to update.
  4. Update your password in the Password field.
  5. Select More Options in the Outgoing server: section.
  6. Update your password in the Password field.
  7. Click OK
 Mozilla Thunderbird
  1. On a Windows computer, go to Tools, then Options. If using a Mac, select Preferences from the Firefox menu in the menubar.
  2. Click the Security button and go to the Passwords tab.
  3. Click Saved Passwords...
  4. Click Show Passwords. (You may be prompted for a master password.)
  5. A box will appear asking, "Are you sure you wish to show your passwords?" Select Yes.
  6. Remove both your incoming (imap://) and outgoing (smtp://) passwords associated with your UMBC account by selecting both and clicking Remove.
  7. Close all windows and quit Thunderbird.
  8. Reopen Thunderbird.
  9. Thunderbird will attempt to check for incoming mail, at which point it will prompt you for a new password. Enter your new password. Be sure to check Use Password Manager to remember this password, and press OK. This will save your incoming server password
  10. To save your outgoing server password, you'll be prompted to re-enter your password the next time you try to send an email. After entering your password, be sure to click Use Password Manager to remember this password, and press OK.
