Change or edit a class association
Before You Begin...
There are different class associations that can be identified for a class section. They include:
Single Component - a free standing class that is independent of other classes. (The section number should match the associated class number.)
Multiple Component - when one class is associated to one other type of class component (such as a lecture is associated to a lab.)
When using Multiple Component associations, one of the classes will be set as the 'graded' component and the other class(es) will be 'non-graded'. Students would register for the 'graded' section of an associated class and would be automatically enrolled in the non-graded section of the class. Some examples of multiple component classes include:
Success Factors:
All sections must be created prior to building the class associations.
Once the associations are created, and a student registers for the class, the class association field will no longer be available to edit.
If you do need to change an association after a student registers for the class, the student(s) must be dropped from all class sections and then reenroll in the class once the changes are completed (you should avoid this whenever possible!)
Scenario | How to Create the Class | Additional Information |
---|---|---|
A lecture has four (4) labs associated to it. The lecture could support 100 students and each lab could support 25 students | In this example, each class section that is a lab would be set up as the graded component and the lecture would be the non-graded component. | The student is automatically pulled into the non-graded component (lecture). |
A single lecture has ten (10) discussions or labs and the student can select the discussion time after selecting the lecture. | In this example, the lecture is the graded component and each discussion or lab is a non-graded component. | The student is NOT automatically pulled into the non-graded component (discussion or lab). The student must register for the graded component (lecture), then select from a list of non-graded components (discussions or labs) during the registration process. |
A single lecture is associated to a single lab or discussion. | In this example, create the graded component as either the lecture or the lab. | The student will be automatically enrolled into the non-graded component. |

SA Tip
When working with associated classes, especially when associating multiple lectures, labs and/or discussions, be sure to associate the correct classes together. It is recommended that you first document all of the class section numbers and assign them association numbers to ensure they are correct. Once created, and a student registers for the class, you cannot make changes to the associations.
