Access to Collections:
The Archives is open to the public during operating hours. It is strongly suggested that patrons make an appointment by calling or emailing the Archives.
Hours of Service
The Archives is located on the second floor of the Hoover Library and is open 8:30am to 1:30pm Monday through Friday. During Fall and Spring Semesters the Archives is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 noon to 5:00pm. The Archives is closed when the library is closed.

Detailed Description of Collections
Architectural Documents: Architectural documents include plats, plans, blueprints, and specifications of the College's buildings and property. Included in this collection are blueprints by Jackson Gott.
Artifacts: Saber purported to be that of Private George W. Sandoe (1843-1863). Sandoe was the first Union casualty at Gettysburg. This saber was donated to the History Department by William Martin a descendant.
Audiovisual Materials: Included in these collections are films by Earl Griswold, sociologist. One of his early films (1960s) is about Frederick County. In the late sixties Dr. Griswold worked with psychologist Dr. McCay Vernon, a renowned researcher in deaf education. During this period Dr. Griswold produced many films on deaf education.
Books and Monographs:  The Archives includes over 500 volumes from the library of James Thomas Ward, the College's first president. This collection contains Universal Topography (London,1675) with  a map and description of Maryland and George W. Howard's 1873 volume The Monumental City, its Past History and Present Resources.
Personal papers:Â The Ward\Lewis papers - This collection includes 39 diaries of the first president of McDaniel College James Thomas Ward (1820-1897). These diaries (1866-1895) give a personal glimpse of domestic life in Carroll County as well as the early history of McDaniel College. Ward also writes about his work with the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church.Â
Dorothy Elderdice (1892 -1979) papers - Ms. Elderdice was a pageant writer and active in Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. This collection contains her diaries from 1907-1979, copy of her pageant written and performed for the 50th anniversary of WILPF, scrapbooks, and photographs.
Brigadier General Robert Gill (1889-1983) papers - General Gill was a real estate developer in Baltimore (Stoneleigh) and a lawyer. During World War II he was executive under Justice Robert Jackson, chief prosecutor for the United States, during the Nuremberg trials. This collection consists of scrapbooks, papers, photographs, and memorabilia.
