Overview
Bowie State University is a historically-black college, founded in 1865 as Baltimore Normal School No. 3, and the oldest HBCU in Maryland. In the early 20th century the institution came under the state department of education and moved to its current location in Prince George's county. It evolved from a teachers college to a state college in 1963, and a university in 1988, when it joined the University of Maryland system.
In 2009 the University undertook a reorganization and revitalization of Archives and Special Collections, after more than 15 years without dedicated staff. Staff is limited to one archivist currently on a part-time basis.
