How Should I Prepare For a Virtual SEA Course?
It is strongly recommended that students log on to the class at least 15 minutes early on the first day of class to get signed in, ensure your microphone and video work, as well as, download any software you might need to enter into the class meeting. The instructor will be available 30 minutes prior to the start of class on the first day of each class to help students get logged on.
How will I log into the class?
An email will be sent out on the Wednesday before your student’s class is to begin with all the information you will need to log on. This will include:
A link to sign onto the class for the week.
Any other links needed to download software (for select classes only)
Email the instructor if you are having difficulty logging into the class.
What if I want the instructor to use a different email address to send the class link invitation than the one I used to sign my child up? For example: I want my child’s email to be used, not mine.
For online courses there will be an opportunity at the time of registration to put down your preferred email address for the course link. If you are not in an online class you may ignore this question.
What should I do if I am having sound or video issues?
Use the call-in option that is in the email class details, below the link to log on. At the end of class or during the break, reach out and see if the instructor can help you fix the issue. You can also send us an email at SEA@UMBC.EDU and we will do what we can to support you.
What sort of tips are there for troubleshooting technical issues?
Close other programs and windows on your device, not only to avoid distraction, but to assure best signal processing.
Connecting directly to your router/modem via ethernet cable assures the best and smoothest audio and video quality (Wifi often causes signal compression, dropouts, and video hesitation, especially if other users are on the same node).
Pre-test your camera and mic.
Mute your mic when not talking to avoid background noise or echoes which might interrupt the instructor or other students.
