How do I connect to the UMBC Residential Wired Network using a PC running Windows 7?

Using the UMBC Residential Network (ResNet) requires that your computer sign in with your account. There are a few steps necessary to do so using Windows.

Note

If you already plugged your computer into the network jack, you will need to disconnect and reconnect the network cable after following these steps.

Start by downloading this file: login.noc.crt . Once it's downloaded, double-click the file in your Downloads folder.
2. In the window that appears, click "Install Certificate".
3. This will open the Certificate Import Wizard. Click Next.
4. On the next step of the wizard, click "Place all certificates in the following store", then "Browse", then select "Trusted Root Certification Authorities". Press OK, then Next.
5. You may see the following warning. Click Yes.
6. Open the Start Menu, and enter "services.msc" and press Enter.
7. This will open the Services window. Scroll down to "Wired AutoConfig" and double-click it.
8. In the window that opened, set "Startup Type" to Automatic, and click Start, then OK. Then close the Services Window. Make sure to click Start before proceeding to step 4.
9. Open the Start menu and type "ncpa.cpl" and press Enter. This should open the Network Connections window. Right-click on the entry for your wired (not wireless) network adapter and click Properties.
10. In the window that opened, click on the Authentication tab, and make sure "Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication" is checked. Note If there is no Authentication tab, go back to step 8 and be sure to click Start.
11. Click Additional Settings. In the window that appeared, select "Specify authentication mode" and select "User authentication" from the dropdown list. Press OK to return to the Network Adapter Properties window.
12. Now click Settings next to "Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)". In the window that opened, under the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" list, select "login.noc.umbc.edu".
13. Click "Configure" next to "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)". Make sure "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password" is unchecked, and press OK on both windows.
14. Disconnect and reconnect your network cable. You will see a login window appear; enter your UMBC username and password, and you should be online within a few seconds. You should not have to repeat any of these steps when you connect in the future.
