Goals

  1. Diagnose issue with East Mirror door catching on N/S Mirror doors

  2. Figure out what is/is not working with the GAM

Log

Mirror Doors

  1. Enabled all motors

  2. Opened DFM TCS on CC

  3. Cycled Mirror Doors 4x, no issue opening or seating/reseating.

    1. Hooray. Solved?

    2. Perhaps temperature/weather dependent?

      1. Are the doors flexing?

      2. Limit switch metal flexing (shouldn't too much bc stainless steel)

      3. Need some quick  way to determine how well the doors have sealed

GAM

  1. Establish GAM Connection

  2. Acces DFM TCS SW > Telescope > GAM Control

    1. "Update GAM Status"

      1.  Dialog box changed to "Send Command"

      2. No further updates ...

      3. Needed to reset GAM Remote Control Box

        1. Close DFM TCS SW

        2. Switch Toggle to Off (Red LED goes out)

        3. Wait 10s

        4. Switch Toggle On (Red LED goes on)

        5. Start DFM TCS SW

      4. "GAM Status Information" fields update top→bottom

  3. South Filter Wheel, over 37-pin cable; 8 positions

    1. Manual Changes & Updates

      1. On South face of GAM, spun handle so that filter position changed

      2. Moved between single positions (e.g., 4→5)

        1. Resent "Update GAM Status" command and got correct results

      3. Moved between multiple positions (e.g., 1→6)

        1. Resent "Update GAM Status" command and got correct results

    2. On one manual movement, the "Update GAM Status" command was sent while spinning handle

      1. GAM Status Information failed to update

      2. GAM Communication froze

      3. Had to reset GAM again (see step 2 above)

      4. Could not replicate communication issue ... not sure what happened

      5. This is bad. We cannot have GAM communication cut-out in middle of session

      6. What is the role of the GAM Remote Control Box

    3. SW Changes & Updates

      1. On DFM TCS SW > Telescope > GAM Control > Filter Wheels (tab)

        1. Set South FW position to different positions

        2. Hit "Apply"

        3. Motors moved to correct filters

        4. On "Update GAM Status" repolls, correct positions reported

        5. Again, moved between single & multiple positions.

          1. All successful

    4. DFM TCS correctly communicates over 37-pin cable to South Filter Wheel motors and encoders.

  4. Translating Stage, over 37-pin cable; 2 positions

    1. GAM Status Information boxes report position 3 – no mention of this position to DFM TCS Manual (pg 21)

    2. Identified limit switches on metal slab toward south side of GAM interior, these are small rivets meant to actuate two limit switches (one on each side; stowed, on-axis)

    3. DFM TCS SW > Telescope > GAM Control > Translating Stage (tab)

    4.  Manually moved stage to stowed position and on-axis

      1. Repolled

      2. No changes

    5. Attempted SW movement of translating stage

      1. No movement

      2. Motor twitched when repolling ... not sure what this means

    6. Motor should be tested with external power supply

    7. Limit switches should be tested via extraction and continuity tested (or something)

    8. More testing is needed to diagnose issues with translating stage motors and encoders

  5. Rotating Mirror, over 37-pin cable; 4 positions

    1. DFM TCS SW > Telescope > GAM Control > Translating Stage (tab)

    2.  GAM reports position correctly

    3. Asked SW to move rotating mirror to any position

      1. Mirror mount caught on motor mount

      2. Loosened set screw (smallest allen key one we had) and lifted mount slightly from motor mount

      3. Mount "grumbles" as it moves until the tang/tab finds the Hall Effect sensor, then moves swiftly to the desired position

      4. The stage needs to find the sensor each time (unless the tang/tab is already at the sensor) before moving to desired position

    4. DFM TCS correctly communicates over 37-pin cable to rotating mirror motor motors and encoders

A.Access DFM TCS SW

Notes

See log with notes for next steps

ToDo

  1. Re-bundle wires for GAM

  2. Make GAM 14-pin connector wire

  3. Mount remaining cameras

  4. Buy low-profile non-IR camera to watch mirror doors (wireless or PoE)

    1. Wireless would mean recharging camera periodically and introduction of wifi into risk portfolio

    2. PoE may require fishing cables through mount – which would be complicated
