Michelle's Musing on Google Doc and the UMBC Wiki

  • In GoogleDocs I easily figured out how to allow a bunch of people to edit or view a doc, and how to publish and keep the published version updated. But there appears to be no quick and simple way to give a bunch of people access to the doc. You can get and use contacts if you use g-mail, but otherwise it appears you have to individually cut and paste e-mail addresses in, or type them in. I wanted to simply copy the list of people from another document, but it wouldn't let me do that. Putting a long list of names on many docs would be very time consuming. Maybe if set up as an org could quickly and easily give permission to the whole org, though?

  • Neither here nor GoogleDocs handled editing of a pasted in web page with a table in it readily. Admittedly, I didn't fiddle around with it a bunch, I wanted it to just work without a bunch of hassles. Both messed up the editing (or did not readily show me how to do it). There are buttons here that looked promising, but I very quickly got to a point where the cursor just got stuck and I couldn't do anything at all.

  • When I use the link button to insert a URL here, the display of what I'm typing cuts off long before the end of many URL's, preventing me from seeing what I'm typing and being able to correct errors in it.

  • When I navigate to a URL here I stay in blackboard and get a blackboard URL and can't figure out how to bookmark or get the URL for the actual page that I'm on.
