Storage Quotas

  • Existing Faculty, Staff, and Current Students have a Google Drive quota that allows them 5GB+ headroom:

    • If you are a student with less than 3GB, you are in the 5GB quota group. Faculty and staff are provided a minimum of 25GB.

    • If you currently have 3 – 15GB, you are in a 25GB quota group.

    • If you have 15 – 90GB, you are in a 100GB quota group.

    • If you have 90 – 900GB, you are in a 100TB quota group.
      If you are a member of the 100TB group, you may be contacted by DoIT to determine the most appropriate place to store your data.

  • New Users [Google Storage, OneDrive and Box] :

    • New faculty and staff members will receive 25GB of storage.

    • New students will receive 5GB of storage.

  • Alumni [Google Storage]:

    • Alumni receive 5GB of storage.

    • Alumni with Google storage above the 5GB allowed have been granted a temporary increased quota to accommodate their current usage. Requests to increase temporary quotas will not be granted.
      We aim to help all alumni accounts get below 5GB by the summer of 2025. Please stay tuned for tips and resources coming in early 2025 from DoIT.

UMBC’s Google storage assignments are based on affiliation precedence.
If an individual holds multiple affiliations, the highest affiliation listed below determines their storage allocation..

Storage does not stack. Storage is assigned based on the highest affiliation an individual holds, not the total number of affiliations.

Google Storage Affiliation Hierarchy

The tiers are ordered from highest to lowest:

Primary Google Storage Tiers

  1. Emeritus
    Emeritus individuals retain access similar to current faculty/staff. Access is reviewed every five years. This category is the highest in the affiliation hierarchy.

  2. Faculty / Staff
    All actively employed personnel, including faculty, staff, instructors, and equivalent center-based roles. Pre-hire individuals fall into this tier once fully onboarded.

  3. Students / Graduate Assistants / Student Staff
    All active learners and student workers, including undergraduate students, graduate students, graduate assistants, and student staff.

  4. Retiree
    Retirees do not receive Google storage by default unless granted Emeritus status.
