Logging onto an on campus Active Directory (AD) Machine

These instructions are intended for people trying to logon to AD using the on campus UMBC network. If you are off campus attempting to logon please use the following wiki’s instructions.

https://umbc.atlassian.net/wiki/x/IAASKg

If this is the first time a person is logging onto a computer joined to Active Directory, the computer should be connected to an ethernet cable connected to an active network jack and rebooted prior to attempting the initial logon.

After reboot the user should:

  1. Select “other user” option

  2. Provide their myUMBC username and myUMBC password (see screen cap below). Do not add “@umbc.edu” to the end of the username.

The “Sign in to:” prompt should have “AD”. If it has anything besides “AD” you can add “ad\” to the username field before the username and it should correct this and force authentication to the AD domain.

Common Logon Errors and Resolution Procedures:

-“The Sign-in method you’re trying to use isn’t allowed.  For more info, contact your network administrator.”

  • This could mean the user attempting logon does not have the appropriate AD access.  Please submit a ticket to the TSC requesting AD access for this user if one has not been submitted.

  • If the user’s AD access has already been granted by a resolved RT Ticket. Please ensure that the computer was plugged into an active network jack using an ethernet cable and rebooted. The computer’s polices must be updated to allow for newly added AD users to logon.

  • If these steps do not resolve the problem. Please reply to your resolved RT ticket’s email to re-open it and DoIT staff will be in touch to troubleshoot.

-”We can’t sign you in with this credential because your domain isn’t available. Make sure your device is connected to your organization’s network and try again.  If you previously signed in to this device with another credential, you can sign on with that credential.”

***Please note the Visitor wireless network will not work as a connection method for logging onto AD. ***

If you need assistance getting the computer on the UMBC network please submit a new RT ticket to the TSC directed to the Desktop support queue.

This message means that the AD username and password combination attempted does not match one in the AD system’s records.

Ensure that the person attempting logon is just putting the correct myUMBC username and using their myUMBC password.  Next to the password submit arrow there is an eye icon toggle that will let the user see their entered password in plain text while clicked on to verify.

If everything appears to be correct please reply to the resolved RT ticket’s email for the account request and it will be re-opened. DoIT staff will  be in touch to troubleshoot.
