Can I use Panopto to screencast a copyrighted video?

Tell Me

No.

When you use Panopto or any screen recording software to capture media content, and post that content to your Blackboard course, Panopto folders, Box or Google Drive storage, etc., you are circumventing the digital copyright protection established by the owner. This is not permitted under U.S. copyright law. Under some circumstances, reasonable portions of media are permitted for teaching and learning, but not when you circumvent the digital protection. Please seek alternative options such as requesting copyright-cleared content through the AOL Library or linking to existing online content.

DoIT is legally obligated to remove copyrighted materials from its cloud-based systems and campus systems when this content is identified by staff, users, or when it receives a DMCA takedown notice.
