Can I upload a media file or a large file to Blackboard?
View our webinar: Optimize your Blackboard course quota
Unfortunately, Blackboard is not a streaming server and media files will degrade system performance. Media files include:
Audio (mp3, mp4, wav, aiff, flac)
Video (wmv, avi, mp4, m4v, mov, mpv, mkv, mpg, mpeg, camrec, vob)
Interactive (swf, flv)
Further, an audit of our current Blackboard site revealed other files are using outdated formats or are simply too large for dissemination to students. The cloud infrastructure will not support file uploads larger than 500 MB. Therefore, individual file uploads in Original courses are limited to 75 MB to reduce impact on course quotas.
The file upload limit applies to both faculty AND student submissions. Faculty and students who attempt to upload files that are larger than 75 MB will receive a warning, indicating the names of files that were rejected. See → File upload size in Blackboard courses
Affected file types may include audio, video, and interactive listed above as well as:
Image (tif/tiff, bmp, jpg, xif, heif, psd, svg, eps)
Narrated or media-rich PowerPoint (ppt, pptx, pps, ppm, ppsx, key)
Documents (pdf, doc, docx, rtf, ibooks, xls, xlsx, csv)
Computer executables (iso, exe)
Compressed files (zip, rar, tar.gz, bz2)
Classroom tools (mat, prs, pcapng)
Moving Your Media Content
First, download your media files from the Bb Content Collection and delete them from your course
Next, migrate your multimedia (videos & audio) to Panopto upload your large files to Box where you have unlimited content
Finally, restore the content to your Blackboard course by adding
a link to a folder of files from Box or folder of videos in Panopto
