Connecting to the GlobalProtect VPN on a Mac

This guide provides a comprehensive step-by-step process for setting up and using the GlobalProtect VPN on Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. It's essential for users at UMBC to ensure secure access to the university's network, especially when working remotely. By following this guide, individuals can easily navigate the installation and connection process, ensuring they remain connected to campus resources without any hassle. This resource is invaluable for both new and returning students or staff needing VPN access.

1. Open a browser and navigate to the Global Protect VPN site. Type "gpvpn.umbc.edu [[Enter]]"

2. Click "Download VPN Client Software"

3. Click the appropriate download for Mac 32/64 bit.

4. Click "Allow" if prompted for downloading.

5. Click the Downloads button

6. Double Click the GlobalProtect.pkg download to start the installer.

7. If you are unable to find the installer in your browser, please navigate to your "Downloads" directory on your computer.

8. Double click "GlobalProtect.pkg" to run the installer.

9. The installer begins. Click "Continue"

10. Click "Continue"

11. Click "Install"

12. Click "Close"

13. If prompted you can click "Move to Trash"

14. Click the GlobalProtect status menu icon that looks like a globe.

15. Click "Get Started"

16. If prompted for the Portal type "gpvpn.umbc.edu"

17. Click "Connect"

18. If your browser session has already been logged into UMBC services, you may not see this screen. However, if this screen appears, proceed to login with your UMBC credentials.

(Safari) To make your VPN experience easier in the future, please click "Always Allow" so you are not prompted with this dialog each time.

(Chrome) Check the Always allow gpvpn.umbc.edu to open links of this type in the associated app checkbox, then click Open GlobalProtect

(Firefox) Check the Always allow gpvpn.umbc.edu to open links of this type in the associated app checkbox, then click Open Link

(Edge) Click the Always allow gpvpn.umbc.edu to open links of this type in the associated app checkbox and then click the Open button.

19. If you see this prompt, please click "Open System Settings"

20. Click this toggle button to enable the VPN. This ensures your traffic is being routed through the VPN to access campus resources.

21. Click "Allow”

22. Click the Done button

23. Click this close button

Tip: When connecting, you may receive a message similar to this. This is due to your computer optimizing the connection between the VPN and your machine. This is normal and may happen while connected to the VPN depending on network conditions.

24. Click the GlobalProtect Connected status menu, you should now be connected.
