SFTP  (Secure File Transfer Protocol) software provides an interface for accessing your GL file system. This can be helpful for:

  • Dragging and dropping files to/from your local PC and your VM
  • Quickly rearranging and removing files from your GL
  • Avoiding command-line interfacing

Using WinSCP (Windows)

UMBC uses WinSCP as it's default Windows SFTP software. To download and set-up WinSCP for your UMBC GL account follow the following procedure:

  1. Go to https://winscp.net/eng/download.php and press "download."
  2. Start the installer and "allow this program to make changes to your computer."

3. Accept the license agreement and select "Full upgrade."

4. Once installed you will see the login screen. To access your folders and files on GL, select SFTP as the "File protocol." The "Host name" should be gl.umbc.edu. The "User name" will be your UMBC ID and the password will be your UMBC password. If this is your personal computer, you can choose to save these credentials for quick login.

5. The left side is your local file system, while, the right side of the screen will be your virtual UMBC drive. From here you will be able to drag and drop files from either screen into the other, or directly from your Desktop into WinSCP and vice versa.
