Your Career Center card is a valuable tool to track your engagement with the Career Center and enhance your career readiness. Accessible via your myUMBC Profile, the card is divided into 5 sections, which you can complete by taking the following actions:

• Career Interests Defined: Select your current and post-graduate career interests in the Handshake job system, so that advisors can help you meet your current and future goals, and so that Handshake shows you the most relevant jobs and content. Log into Handshake, click on your initials/profile icon > "My career interests."  Be sure to update your interests as you progress in your academic career, e.g. if you are looking for on-campus work next semester, a summer internship, or full-time employment as an upcoming UMBC graduate.

• Resume in Handshake: Check out the resume writing resources and sample resumes on our website and in the Career Guide to help you draft a strong resume. Have it reviewed by Career Center staff to ensure it's clear, well-structured, free of errors, and highlights your strengths. Then upload your resume to Handshake to use it to apply for jobs and internships. Log into Handshake, click on your initials/profile icon > "My documents." It is always a good practice to update your resume at the end of each semester.

• Appointments: Schedule an appointment with Career Center staff online (via Handshake), in person (Math/Psychology 201), or by phone (410-455-2216). Take a look at our Appointments page for the various ways we can work with you from resume critiques and interview prep to career decision making.

• Workshops / Events / Career Fairs: Attend an upcoming event to learn about an industry or job search skill, meet employers and/or network with alumni! We'd love to see you there. A full list of events is available on the Career Center calendar.

• Internship / Co-op / Research: Gaining real-world experience through an internship, research, or co-op experience is one of the best ways to make yourself a competitive candidate for full-time jobs and graduate school. You can complete this step by registering for a practicum course (PRAC) in conjunction with each experience. More information is available on our Internships page.

As time goes by, you may notice your check marks fading to a gray dotted line. This is a helpful reminder to revisit that area of your career readiness and keep everything up to date!
