If you are required to use multi-factor authentication, you will be automatically prompted to enroll the first time you log in to myUMBC.

Follow the steps below for a walkthrough of this process.

  1. Log in to any UMBC application that requires WebAuth, for example, myUMBC.

  2. After you enter your password, you will see the Duo Security introduction. Click 'Next' to advance through the introduction and learn why protecting your identity with two-step verification is important.

3. Next, Duo will ask you to choose a verification option. You can use one of the following, though UMBC recommends using the Duo Mobile app.

Duo Mobile: Use the Duo Mobile App on your mobile device to confirm when you log in (Recommended).

Security Key: Use an external device (connected to a USB port) to confirm when you log in (Not recommended).

Phone Number: Use SMS to confirm when you log in.

Note

Once you enroll a device, you will need to have access to it in order to log into many UMBC resources.

9. After you have activated the account in the mobile app, confirm the account name as 'UMBC' and continue. (This is used to distinguish your UMBC login from other websites with which you may use multi-factor authentication).

10. Duo will now attempt to log you in for the first time. If you are using Duo Mobile, open the app on your phone.

You will see a prompt to confirm your login, as well as:

  • The location of the login attempt

  • The time of the login attempt

Confirm that the login is you by tapping the green check button.

11. When asked 'is this your device', if you are not the owner of the computer or device you are using to log in, click 'No, other people use this device'.

If you select 'Yes, this is my device', Duo will skip multi-factor authentication for this device for the next 30 days.

12. You have now completed enrollment and logged in successfully.

The next time you log in to myUMBC, or any other UMBC site that uses webauth, if you selected 'Yes, this is my device', Duo will automatically skip multi-factor authentication.

Otherwise, Duo will prompt you to confirm your login using the same multi-factor method you registered with. For example, if you registered using the mobile app, Duo will prompt you to confirm using the app.

If you need to change your authentication method, or add a device to log in with (such as a new mobile phone), see How do I change my default device or authentication method for Duo?.
